1894 - 1979 Person Name: Vincent B. Silliman, 1894-1979 Author of "Faith of the Larger Liberty" in Singing the Living Tradition Silliman, Rev. Vincent Brown, D.D. (Hudson, Wisconsin, June 29, 1894-Feb. 1979, Yarmouth, Maine). He graduated from Meadville Theological School in 1920 and from the University of Minnesota in 1925. He served Unitarian churches in Buffalo, New York; Portland, Maine; Hollis, N.Y.; and Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of the committee which edited The Beacon Song and Service Book for Children and Young People (1935), and edited We Sing of Life (1955), an unusual collection of songs for children and young people, with a strong ethical emphasis, some set to familiar hymn tunes, others to interesting folk music. Mr. Silliman contributed to words of several songs. One of them, beginning "Morning, so fair to see" is also included in Hymns of the Spirit (1937). --Henry Wilder Foote, DNAH Archives

Honor Mary Thwaites

1914 - 1993 Person Name: Honor Mary Thwaites 1914- Translator of "Sei Lob und Ehr' dem höchsten Gut" in The Australian Hymn Book with Catholic Supplement Honor Mary Thwaites was born in Australia in 1914. She attended the University of Melbourne. She went to England in the 1930s and worked with a group from the Society of Friends assisting Jewish people and others to escape from Nazi Germany. She married the Australian poet and intelligence officer Michael Thwaites in 1939 and they returned to Australia. There she wrote several hymns that appear in Australian hymnbooks. N Naber, Hymnary

Federico Fliedner

1845 - 1901 Person Name: Fritz Fliedner, 1845-1901 Translator of "A Dios Dad Gracias" in Himnario Metodista [Friedrich Ludwig Fliedner, Fritz Fliedner] Born: June 10, 1845, Kaiserswerth, Düsseldorf, Germany. Died: April 25, 1901, Madrid, Spain, of typhus. Buried: Civil cemetery, Madrid, Spain. Son of Theodor Fliedner, founder of the Kaiserswerth Deaconess Institute, Federico was educated at the Gymnasium in Gütersloh, studied theology at Halle (1864-46) and earned his PhD at Tübingen (1867). He served as a nurse in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, and taught school for a year in rural Hilden. After ordination in 1870, he left Germany to be a missionary to Spain, settling in Madrid and becoming a chaplain at the German embassy. He learned Spanish, attended a Spanish high school, and studied medicine at the Universidad Central. Fliedner was instrumental in creating what is now known as the Iglesia Evangélica Española. In 1873, Fliedner founded the Librería Nacional y Extranjera, an extensive collection of text books and periodicals. Among these was The Children’s Friend, published from 1874 to 1939. Fliedner wrote biographies of John Howard, Elizabeth Fry, missionary-explorer David Livingstone, Martin Luther (1878), and his own parents, Theodore Fliedner of Kaiserswerth (1883) and Caroline Fliedner of Kaiserswerth (1883). He also wrote an autobiography, published first in German in two volumes (Aus meinem Leben, 1901-03), then translated into Spanish and published posthumously in the Christian Magazine (Nos. 513 to 553). Translator of "Our Father God, Thy Name We Praise" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Ernest A. Payne is General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland with offices in London. He is also active in the Psalms and Hymns Trust which is the publication society of the British Baptists. He was a member of the Editorial Committee for the Baptist Hymn Book of 1962. He was also a member of the committee which prepared The Companion for this hymnal. He is an active member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. His translation of one of the hymns in the Anabaptist Ausbund of the 16th Century appears in the Baptist Hymn Book, entitled "Our Father God, thy name we praise." He is the author of numerous books including the "Free Church Tradition in the Life of England" and the "Fellowship of Believers". He has held many important positions in British church life including service as moderator of the Free Church Federal Council 1958-59.
