Speros Demetrios Athans

1883 - 1969 Person Name: S. D. Athans Hymnal Number: 48 trad. Esp. of "Abre mis ojos (Open My Eyes)" in Fiesta Jubilosa Speros Demetrios Athans was born 1883 in Turkey. Raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, Athans left home at age 15, after his father’s death. He spent two years on the island of Corfu, Greece, and two more in Egypt, then went to Great Britain, where he worked as a sailor. In 1903 he went to America, and during immigration processing, someone gave him a New Testament in Greek. A year later, he joined a Nazarene church in Chicago, Illinois. He then enrolled in a Bible school and university. While in school in California, he began to study Spanish and to work with the Latino community. In 1910 he decided to work in evangelism. Gerhard M. Cartford

1923 - 2016 Hymnal Number: 1 Translator of "Cantad al Señor (O Sing to the Lord)" in Fiesta Jubilosa Gerhard Cartford was born in 1923. He helped to edit the Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) and wrote the liturgical chant service for the hymnal. He also translated some hymns for Libro de Litugia y Cántico and also helped edit this hymnal. Maurice F. Bell

1862 - 1947 Person Name: Maurice F. Bell, 1862-1947 Hymnal Number: 38 trad. Ingl. of "En el desierto el Señor (The Glory of These Forty Days)" in Fiesta Jubilosa Bell, Maurice Frederick, M.A., son of G. W. Bell, barrister at law, was born in London, Sept. 3, 1862. He graduated from Hertford Coll., Oxford (B.A. 1884, M.A. 1887), was ordained D. 1885, P. 1886, and has been since 1904 Vicar of St. Mark, Regent's Park, London. He contributed to The English Hymnal, 1906, four translations (60, 68, 624, 634), and "O dearest Lord, by all adored" (Close of Festival), 1906. [Rev. Clara H. Scott

1841 - 1897 Hymnal Number: 48 Author of "Abre mis ojos (Open My Eyes)" in Fiesta Jubilosa Clara Harriett Fiske Jones Scott USA 1841-1897. Born at Elk Grove, IL, daughter of a farmer, the family moved to Chicago in 1856. Clara enrolled in the first Chicago Musical Institute, after founders, Chauncy M Cady and William Bradbury, opened it in 1858. Following her graduation from the program, she found employment at the new Lyons Girl’s Seminary (also founded in 1858) in Lyons, IA. While working there, she met Henry Clay Scott, who worked for Scott & Ovington Brothers wholesale crockery company. The two married in 1861 in McGregor, IA. They had two daughters, Medora and Mary. The family moved to Austin, IL, near Chicago in the 1870s. She become a composer, hymnwriter, and publisher. She was the first woman to publish a volume of anthems, ‘The Royal anthem book’ in 1882. Horatio Palmer, a friend, helped her publish her songs. She issued three collections of songs. In 1895 she and her husband, now an invalid, moved to Chicago. In 1897 she was returning to her friend’s house after attending a funeral in DuBuque, IA. She was driving a horse-drawn buggy with two friends, Martha Hay and D D Myers. The buggy’s hold-back strap snapped, spooking the horse, who raced forward, colliding with a coping stone, causing the buggy to roll. Clara and Martha were thrown out and both died instantly. The third lady, D D, was severly injured. Clara’s funeral was well-attended by music writers, teachers, professors, publishers, and friends. Two of her own compositions were sung by a quartet of close friends. She died at Dubuque, IA. John Perry
