Lord, You Give the Great Commission

Author: Jeffery Rowthorn, b. 1934 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 44 hymnals Topics: Reformation Day Refrain First Line: With the Spirit's gifts empow'r us Lyrics: 1 Lord, you give the great commission: "Heal the sick and preach the word." Lest the church neglect its mission and the gospel go unheard, help us witness to your purpose with renewed integrity: With the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry. 2 Lord, you call us to your service: "In my name baptize and teach." That the world may trust your promise, life abundant meant for each, give us all new fervor, draw us closer in community: With the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry. 3 Lord, you make the common holy: "This my body, this my blood." Let us all, for earth's true glory, daily lift life heavenward, asking that the world around us share your children's liberty: With the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry. 4 Lord, you show us love's true measure: "Father, what they do, forgive." Yet we hoard as private treasure all that you so freely give. May your care and mercy lead us to a just society: With the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry. 5 Lord, you bless with words assuring: "I am with you to the end." Faith and hope and love restoring, may we serve as you intend, and, amid the cares that claim us, hold in mind eternity: With the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry. Lord of Our Life

Lord, while their poisoned arrows they are hurling, You can preserve us. 3 Lord, you can help when earthly armor fails us; Lord, you can save when deadly sin assails us; And in the day when hell itself appalls us, Grant us your peace, Lord: 4 Peace in our hearts, where sinful thoughts are raging, Peace in your Church, our troubled souls assuaging, Peace when the world its endless war is waging, Peace in your heaven. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546 Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Appears in 30 hymnals Topics: Reformation Day Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from ev'ry need That hath us now o'ertaken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of sabaoth Lord, And there's none other God; He holds the field forever. 3 Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill, They shall not overpow'r us. This world's prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none, He's judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain With his good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict'ry has been won; The Kingdom ours remaineth. Used With Tune: EIN FESTE BURG Text Sources: Tr. composite

God's Word Is like a Flaming Sword

Author: Carl Bernhard Garve; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: Other Observances Reformation Day Lyrics: 1. God’s word is like a flaming sword, A wedge that cleaves the stone; Keen as a fire, so burns his word, And pierces flesh and bone. Let it go forth o’er all the earth To cleanse our hearts within, To show God’s power in Satan’s hour And break the might of sin. 2. God’s word, a wondrous guiding star, On pilgrim hearts does rise, Leads those to God who dwell afar, And makes the simple wise. Let not its light e’er sink in night, But in each spirit shine, That none may miss heaven’s final bliss, Led by God’s light divine. Amen. Scripture: Hebrews 4:12 Used With Tune: OLD 107TH

Before Jehovah's Awesome Throne

Author: Isaac Watts; John Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8 with refrain Appears in 975 hymnals Topics: Reformation Day Lyrics: 1 Before Jehovah's awesome throne, all nations, bow with sacred joy; know that the Lord is God alone, he can create, and he destroy - he can create, and he destroy. 2 His sovereign pow'r without our aid, made us of dust and formed us men; and when like wand'ring sheep we strayed, he brought us to his fold again - he brought us to his fold again. 3 We are his people, we his care, our souls and all our mortal frame: what lasting honors shall we rear, almighty Maker, to your name? - almighty Maker, to your name? 4 We'll crowd your gates with thankful songs, high as the heav'ns our voices raise; and earth, with her ten thousand tongues, shall fill your courts with sounding praise - shall fill your courts with sounding praise. 5 Wide as the world is your command, vast as eternity your love; firm as a rock your truth must stand, when rolling years shall cease to move - when rolling years shall cease to move. Scripture: Psalm 100 Used With Tune: PARK STREET

O Word of God Incarnate

Author: William Walsham How Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 490 hymnals Topics: Other Observances Reformation Day Lyrics: 1 O Word of God Incarnate, O Wisdom from on high, O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky, We praise you for the radiance That from the hallowed page, A lantern to our footsteps, Shines on from age to age. 2 The Church from her dear Master Received the gift divine, And still that light is lifted O'er all the earth to shine. It is the chest so precious, Where gems of truth are stored; It is the heaven-drawn picture Of Christ, the living Word. 3 It floats e'er like a banner Before God's host unfurled; It shines out like a beacon Above the darkening world. It is the chart and compass That o'er life's surging sea, 'Mid mists and rocks and quicksands, Still guides to Christ who saves. 4 O make your Church, dear Savior, A lamp of purest gold, To bear before the nations Your true light, as of old. O teach your wandering pilgrims By this their path to trace, Till, clouds and darkness ended, They see you face to face. Amen. Scripture: 1 Peter 1:23-25 Used With Tune: MUNICH

When Stephen, Full of Power and Grace

Author: Jan Struther Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 11 hymnals Topics: Other Observances Reformation Day Lyrics: 1 When Stephen, full of power and grace, Went forth throughout the land, He bore no shield before his face, No weapon in his hand; But only in his heart a flame And on his lips a sword Wherewith he smote and overcame The foemen of the Lord. 2 When Stephen preached against the laws And by those laws was tried, He had no friend to plead his cause, No spokesman at his side; But only in his heart a flame And in his eyes a light Wherewith God's daybreak to proclaim And rend the veils of night. 3 When Stephen, young and doomed to die, Fell crushed beneath the stones, He had no curse nor vengeful cry For those who broke his bones; But only in his heart a flame And on his lips a prayer That God, in sweet forgiveness' name, Should understand and spare. 4 Let me, O Lord, your cause defend, A knight without a sword; No shield I ask, no faithful friend, No vengeance, no reward; But only in my heart a flame And in my soul a dream, So that the stones of earthly shame A jeweled crown may seem. Amen. Scripture: Acts 6, 7 Used With Tune: SALVATION

Scripture: Psalm 14
