F. A. Ainger, incumbent of Hampstead, Middlesex; born in 1841, educated Trinity College, Cambridge, 1st Class Class. Trip. 1864, Assistant Master at Eton 1864-1901. Author of Eton Songs, 1901-2; Carmen Etonense, Vale, &c, and joint author with H. G. Winkle, M.A., of an English-Latin Verse Dictionary. Mr. Ainger's hymns in common use are the following :— 1. God is working His purpose out. [Missions.] Written and first published in 1894, with Dedication to Archbishop Benson. It was given in Church Hymns, 1903, Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904, and other collections. 2. God of our Fathers, unto Thee. [National Thanksgiving.] Included in English Hymnal, 1906. 3. Let all our brethren join in one. [Harvest.] Included in C. W. A. Brooke's Additional Hymns, 1903. 4. Let God arise to lead forth those. [In Time of War.] Written in 1900, and first printed in the Times the same year. Subsequently pub. by Novello & Co., with music by Sir J. Stainer, and included in Church Hymns, 1903, and Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. 5. Like a mighty man rejoicing in his strength. [Missions.] Written by request for the S.P.G. Centenary, and published in the Centenary collection of Hymns, 1901. 6. Not ours to mourn and weep. [Lent. For the Young.] First published in the Public School Hymn Book, 1903. 7. On them who here, 0 Lord. [Holy Matrimony.] A Wedding Hymn, published with music by Novello & Co., 1903. A most acceptable addition to hymns for Holy Matrimony. 8. Praise the Lord: to-day we raise Hymns of thankfulness and praise. [For Victory] Written in 1902, and first printed in the Times, and t' en, with music, by Novello & Co. Included in Church Hymns, 1903. 9. Praise the Lord! to-day we sing. Birthday of our Founder King. [For Founder's Day.] Written for use at Eton, and included in Eton Songs, 1891-2, as "Hymn for Founder's Day." Admirably suited, with slight change in the opening line, for any Public School. 10. Uprose the stately temple. [Dedication of a School Chapel]. Written in 1891, and published in his Eton Songs, 1891-2. Iona Community

Topics: Advent 3 Year A; Advent 3 Year C Harmonizer of "NOËL NOUVELET" in Voices United Iona Community, an ecumenical Christian group of men and women based on the small island of Iona off the coast of Scotland. The community began in 1938 when the Rev. George MacLeod of the Church of Scotland began a ministry among the unemployed poor who had been neglected by the church. He took a handful of men to the island to rebuild the ruins of a thousand-year-old abbey church. That rebuilding became a metaphor for the rebuilding of the common life, a return to the belief that daily activity is the stuff of godly service – work, and worship. The Community has since grown to include a group of members, associates, and friends all over the United Kingdom and many other countries. In addition to many conferences that attract people to Iona from around the world, the Community is known for its publishing of new songs and prayers for worship, both developed in community and gathered from around the world. Jan Roh

1487 - 1547 Person Name: Johann Horn, c. 1495-1547 Topics: Advent 3, Year A Composer of "GAUDEAMUS PARITER" in Worship (3rd ed.) Pseudonyms-- Johann Cornu Johann Horn John Horn Roh, Johann, was a native of Domascbitz near Leitmeritz, in Bohemia. Roh was his name in Bohemian, but when he wrote in Latin he styled himself Cornu, and in German Horn. In 1518 he was ordained priest and appointed preacher to the Bohemian Brethren's community at Jungbunzlau, in Bohemia. At the Synod of Brandeis, in Sep. 1529, he was chosen as one of the three Seniors of the Unity. Finally, at the Synod of Brandeis, in April 1532, he was appointed Bishop, and held this post till his death, at Jungbunzlau, Feb. 11, 1547. (Koch, ii. 114; Wackernagel, i. p. 727, &c.) Roh was the editor of the Bohemian Hymn Book of 1541, and is said to have written a number of hymns in the Bohemian language, but the edition of 1561 only gives one with his name. He also edited the second German hymn-book of the Brethren, viz., Ein Gesangbuch der Brüder inn Behemen und Merherrn, Nürnberg, 1544; and seems to have been author or translator of all, or nearly all, of the 32 hymns there added. Another hymn ("O heiliger Vater, glitiger Herr") is also given with his name in the Kirchengeseng, 1566. A considerable number of Ron's hymns passed into the Lutheran hymn-books of the 16th and 17th centuries, and into the Moravian Hymn Books of the 18th cent. Rather curiously in the last Moravian Hymn Books, (the Kleines Gesangbuch, Gnadau, 1870), his name is not found in the list of authors. Those of Roh's hymns which have been translated into English are:— i. Gottes Sohn ist kommen. Christmas. In 1544, as above, and thence in Wackernagel iii. p, 350, in 9 stanzas of 6 lines, The heading "Ave Hierarchia" refers to the melody, for it is not a translation from the Latin. Included in V. Babst's Gesang-Buch, Leipzig, 1553, and recently in the Unverfälschter Liedersegen, 1851, No. 6, Strangely enough this fine hymn was omitted from the Kirchengeseng of 1566 and later editions; and though it was included in the Herrnhut Gesang-Buch, 1735, and the Brüder Gesang-Buch, 1778, it has again been omitted from the Kleines Gesang-Buch, 1870. The translations are:— 1. Lo! from highest heaven. A free translation of stanzas i.-iii., vi., by A. T. Russell, as No. 27 in his Psalms & Hymns, 1851. Included, altered, in Kennedy, 1863. 2. Once He came in blessing. A good translation of stanzas i.-iii., v., ix., by Miss Winkworth, in her Chorale Book for England, 1863, No. 26. Included in J. Robinson's Collection, 1869, and the Pennsylvania Lutheran Church Book, 1868. 3. God's Son once descending. This is No. 249 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. Hymns not in English common use:— ii. Betrachtn wir heut zu dieser Frist. Easter. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii. p. 359, in 14 stanzas of 3 lines. Translated as:—(1) "The Saviour Jesus, Friend of Man." As No. 332 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. This is from the recast "Der selge Heiland, Jesus Christ" (based on ii.-v.), as No. 1875 in Appendix xii. c. 1745, to the Herrnhut Gesang-Buch 1735. iii. Ein starker Held ist uns kommen. Christmas. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii. p. 352, in 12 stanzas of 4 lines. Translated as (1) "God took our nature upon Him (stanza iii.), as No. 251 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. iv. Lob Gott getrost mit singen. Christian Church. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii. p. 360, in 9 stanzas of 8 lines. In the Kirchengeseng, 1566, two st. were inserted between iii. and iv. This form, in 11 stanzas, is No. 563 in the Unverfälschter Liedersegen 1851. In the Brüder Gesang-Buch 1778, No. 1014, is a cento in 3 st. (from st. vi., viii., ix. of the 1544, and iv. of the 1566), beginning "Lass dich durch nichts erschrecken," and this form has been translated as "O be not thou dismayed, Believing little band," as No. 596 in the Moravian Hymn Book, 1886. v. O Mensch, thu heut hören. Passiontide. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii., p. 355, in 20 stanzas of 4 lines. William Watkins Reid

1923 - 2007 Person Name: William Watkins Reid, Jr. Topics: Advent 3 Year C Author of "O God of Every Nation" in Voices United William W. Reid, Jr. (1923-2007), after graduating from Oberlin College and Seminary and Yale Divinity School served for more than fifty years as pastor in the Wyoming Conference in rural and inner-city Methodist churches. He served on the Executive Committee of The Hymn Society of America. He was involved in social issues, serving as a councilman and county commissioner. His hymns are widely published in hymnals of many denominations. Mary Louise VanDyke =============================== William W. Reid, Jr. is pastor of the Methodist Church Circuit at Carverton, Pennsylvania. He previously served in a similar capacity at Camptown in the same State. He is a graduate of the Yale Divinity School and Oberlin College. He served during World War II in the Medical Corps and was held prisoner by the Germans for eight months. He is the author of several hymns including those in "Fourteen New Rural Hymns" and "Twelve New World Order Hymns" published by the Hymn Society. ----Fifteen New Christian Education Hymns, 1959. Michael Perry

1942 - 1996 Person Name: Michael A. Perry Topics: Advent 3 Year C Author of "Like a Mighty River Flowing" in Voices United Initially studying mathematics and physics at Dulwich College, Michael A. Perry (b. Beckenham, Kent, England, 1942; d. England, 1996) was headed for a career in the sciences. However, after one year of study in physics at the University of London, he transferred to Oak Hill College to study theology. He also studied at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and received a M.Phil. from the University of Southhampton in 1973. Ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1966, Perry served the parish of St. Helen's in Liverpool as a youth worker and evangelist. From 1972 to 1981 he was the vicar of Bitterne in Southhampton and from 1981 to 1989, rector of Eversley in Hampshire and chaplain at the Police Staff College. He then became vicar of Tonbridge in Kent, where he remained until his death from a brain tumor in 1996. Perry published widely in the areas of Bible study and worship. He edited Jubilate publications such as Hymns far Today's Church (1982), Carols for Today (1986), Come Rejoice! (1989), and Psalms for Today (1990). Composer of the musical drama Coming Home (1987), he also wrote more than two hundred hymns and Bible versifications. Bert Polman
