Stephen P. Starke

b. 1955 Person Name: Stephen P. Starke, b. 1955 Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 Author of "O Gracious Lord, with Love Draw Near" in Christian Worship Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

Thomas Pavlechko

b. 1962 Person Name: Thomas Pavlechko, 1962- Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:17 Composer of "RADIANT CITY" in Worship and Rejoice PAVLECHKO, THOMAS (b. 1962) is the Cantor and Composer-in-Residence at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. Named the Emerging Hymn Tune Composer by HSUSC in 2002, his sacred music compositions, hymn tunes, choral, orchestral and concert band works are widely performed. He is the co-editor of the principal worship planning reference books of the Episcopal Church U.S.A, ,cite>Liturgical Music for the Revised Common Lectionary. His collection of over 600 Psalm settings, St. Martin’s Psalter, is published in two editions with Augsburg Fortress Publishers and St. James Music Press. Pavlechko is a graduate of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, both in his native Ohio. C. W. Naylor

1874 - 1950 Person Name: Charles W. Naylor Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:16 Author of "Consolation" in Timeless Truths Naylor, Charles Wesley. (1874--1950). C. W. Naylor was born in southern Ohio and reared in Ohio and West Virginia by grandparents. At the age of nineteen he left the Methodist church for the Church of God. He worked for a while at the Gospel Trumpet Company in Grand Junction, Michigan and on some evangelistic tours. He was ordained in 1899 in Springfield, Ohio. He was first injured in 1908 in Florida while moving timbers from under a meeting tent. He suffered a dislocated kidney and other internal injuries. A year later he was in a bus accident that left him an invalid for the rest of his life. Herbert O'Driscoll

(Cork, Ireland, October 17, 1928-- ). Anglican. Graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, 1951. Pastorates at Monkstown (Ireland), 1952-1954; Ottawa, Ontario, 1954-1957, 1962-1968; Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, 1957-1960 (naval chaplaincy); Carp, Ont., 1960-1962; Vancouver, British Columbia, (dean), 1968-1982. In 1982 he moved to Washington, D.C. to become the warden of the College of Preachers at Washington Cathedral, but returned to Canada after one year. In both his hymns and his published sermons, he uses traditional techniques to set forth contemporary concerns, so that his work is unusually approachable. --Hugh D. 1869 - 1952 Person Name: Andrew L. Byers Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:16 Composer of "[Child of God's boundless mercy]" in Timeless Truths Andrew Linnaeus Byers was born on August 26, 1869 in Albany, Illinois. Byers’ mother was song writer Nancy Byers. In 1890 he became involved with Daniel Warner & Barney Warren in evangelistic work; later joined the Gospel Trumpet publishing company as music editor for a year. He left that work because of health problems and worked as an evangelist and pastor in Idaho & Oregon before taking a pastorate in Sacramento, California, in 1934. He died on November 9, 1952 in Sacramento, California. His works include: Birth of a Reformation: The Life and Labors of D. S. Warner, 1922 NN, Hymnary.

Samuel Sebastian Wesley

1810 - 1876 Person Name: Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 Composer of "AURELIA" in Common Praise (1998) Samuel Sebastian Wesley (b. London, England, 1810; d. Gloucester, England, 1876) was an English organist and composer. The grandson of Charles Wesley, he was born in London, and sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal as a boy. He learned composition and organ from his father, Samuel, completed a doctorate in music at Oxford, and composed for piano, organ, and choir. He was organist at Hereford Cathedral (1832-1835), Exeter Cathedral (1835-1842), Leeds Parish Church (1842-1849), Winchester Cathedral (1849-1865), and Gloucester Cathedral (1865-1876). Wesley strove to improve the standards of church music and the status of church musicians; his observations and plans for reform were published as A Few Words on Cathedral Music and the Music System of the Church (1849). He was the musical editor of Charles Kemble's A Selection of Psalms and Hymns (1864) and of the Wellburn Appendix of Original Hymns and Tunes (1875) but is best known as the compiler of The European Psalmist (1872), in which some 130 of the 733 hymn tunes were written by him.
