Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming

Author: Theodore Baker (1851-1934); Friedrich Layritz (1808-1859); Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth (1845-1925) Meter: 7.6.7.6.6.7.6 Appears in 102 hymnals Scripture: Luke 1:26-38 Lyrics: 1 Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! of Jesse's lineage coming as seers of old have sung. It came, a blossom bright, amid the cold of winter, when half spent was the night. 2 Isaiah 'twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind, with Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind. To show God's love aright, she bore to us a Saviour, when half spent was the night. 3 O Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, dispel in glorious splendour the darkness everywhere; true man, yet very God, from sin and death now save us, and share our every load. Now, my tongue, the mystery telling

Author: Edward Caswall (1814-1878) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 52 hymnals Scripture: Luke 1:28-35 Lyrics: 1 Now, my tongue, the mystery telling of the glorious body sing, and the blood, all price excelling, which the world's great Lord and King, in a virgin's womb once dwelling, shed for this world's ransoming. 2 That last night, at supper lying, with the Twelve, his chosen band, Jesus, with the law complying, keeps the feast its rites demand; then, more precious food supplying, gives himself with his own hand. 3 Word-made-flesh! his word is making earthly bread his flesh to be, wine his blood; and all partaking should from sinful thoughts be free. Faith alone, sight's limits breaking, show true hearts the mystery. 4 Therefore we, before him bending, this great sacrament revere; older rituals have their ending, for the newer rite is here; faith, our outward sense befriending, makes our inner vision clear. 5 Unto God be praise and honour: to the Father, to the Son, to the mighty Spirit, glory, ever Three and ever One: power and glory in the highest while eternal ages run. Amen. Topics: The Church Celebrates Holy Communion; Christian Year Maundy Thursday; Jesus Word of God Used With Tune: PANGE LINGUA Text Sources: Alt. Hymns Ancient and Modern, 1861

From East to West, from Shore to Shore

Author: Coelius Sedulius; John Ellerton Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 40 hymnals Scripture: Luke 1:26-34 Lyrics: 1 From east to west, from shore to shore, let earth awake and sing-- the holy Child, whom Mary bore, the Christ, the Lord, the King! 2 For lo! the world's creator wears the fashion of a slave; our human flesh the God-head bears, a human race to save. 3 For this how wondrously he wrought! A maiden in her place became in ways beyond all thought the vessel of his grace. 4 He shrank not from the oxen's stall, nor scorned the manger bed; and he, whose bounty feedeth all, at Mary's breast was fed. 5 To shepherds poor the Lord most high, Great Shepherd, was revealed While angel choirs sang joyously above the midnight field: 6 "All glory be to God above, and on the earth be peace to all who long to taste his love, till time itself shall cease." In form of servant is the Lord, and God in cradle lies. 3 This wonder all the world amazed, it shook the starry frame; the hosts of heaven stood to gaze, and bless the Saviour's name. 4 Glad shepherds ran to view this sight; a choir of angels sings, and eastern sages with delight adore this King of kings. 5 Join then, all hearts that are not stone, to sing with choirs above and celebrate this Holy One, the God of peace and love. Hymn 60

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Luke 1:46 First Line: Our souls shall magnify the Lord Lyrics: Our souls shall magnify the Lord, In God the Savior we rejoice: While we repeat the Virgin's song, May the same Spirit tune our voice! [The Highest saw her low estate, And mighty things his hand hath done: His overshadowing power and grace Makes her the mother of his Son. Let ev'ry nation call her blest, And endless years prolong her fame; But God alone must be ador'd: Holy and reverend is his name.] To those that fear and trust the Lord, His mercy stands for ever sure: From age to age his promise lives, And the performance is secure. He spake to Abram and his seed, In thee shall all the earth be blessed;" The memory of that ancient word Lay long in his eternal breast. But now no more shall Isr'el wait, No more the Gentiles lie forlorn: Lo, the desire of nations comes; Behold, the promised seed is born!
