The saints of God! their conflict past

Author: William D. Maclagen Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 70 hymnals Lyrics: The saints of God! their conflict past, And life's long battle won at last, No more they need the shield or sword, They cast them down before their Lord: O happy saints! for ever blest, At Jesus' feet how safe your rest! The saints of God! their wanderings done, No more their weary course they run, No more they faint, no more they fall, No foes oppress, no fears appall: O happy saints! for ever blest, In that dear home how sweet your rest! The saints of God! life's voyage o'er, Safe landed on that blissful shore, No stormy tempests now they dread, No roaring billows lift their head: O happy saints! for ever blest, In that calm haven of your rest! The saints of God their vigil keep, While yet their mortal bodies sleep, Till from the dust they too shall rise And soar triumphant to the skies: O happy saints! rejoice and sing: He quickly comes, your Lord and King! 270 O God of saints! to thee we cry, O Savior! plead for us on high; O Holy Ghost! our Guide and Friend, Grant us thy grace till life shall end; That with all saints our rest may be In that bright Paradise with thee. O Jesus, crucified for man

Author: W. Walsham How Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 47 hymnals Lyrics: O Jesus, crucified for man, O Lamb, all glorious on thy throne, Teach thou our wondering souls to scan The mystery of thy love unknown. We pray thee, grant us strength to take Our daily cross, whate'er it be, And gladly for thine own dear sake In paths of pain to follow thee. As on our daily way we go, Through light or shade, in calm or strife, O may we bear thy marks below In conquered sin and chastened life. And week by week this day we ask That holy memories of thy cross May sanctify each common task, And turn to gain each earthly loss. Grant us, dear Lord, our cross to bear Till at thy feet we lay it down, Win through thy blood our pardon there, And through the cross attain the crown. Amen. The royal banners forward go

Author: Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609; John Mason Neale Appears in 134 hymnals Lyrics: The royal banners forward go, The cross shines forth in mystic glow; Where he in flesh, our flesh who made, Our sentence bore, our ransom paid. There whilst he hung, his sacred side By soldier's spear was opened wide, To cleanse us in the precious flood Of water mingled with his blood. Fulfilled is now what David told In true prophetic song of old, How God the heathen's King should be; For God is reigning from the tree. O tree of glory, tree most fair, Ordained those holy limbs to bear, How bright in purple robe it stood, The purple of a Savior's blood! Upon its arms, like balance true, He weighed the price for sinners due, The price which none but he could pay, And spoiled the spoiler of his prey. To thee, eternal Three in One, Let homage meet by all be done: As by the cross thou dost restore, So rule and guide us evermore. Amen. Topics: Holy Week; Processional Used With Tune: VEXILLA REGIS

Day of wrath! O day of mourning!

Author: Thomas of Celano, 13th cent.; William J. Irons Meter: 8.8.8 Appears in 108 hymnals Lyrics: Day of wrath! O day of mourning! See fulfilled the prophets' warning, Heaven and earth in ashes burning! O what fear man's bosom rendeth, When from heaven the Judge descendeth, On whose sentence all dependeth. Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth; Through earth's sepulchers it ringeth; All before the throne it bringeth. Death is struck, and nature quaking, All creation is awaking, To its Judge an answer making. Lo! the book, exactly worded, Wherein all hath been recorded: Thence shall judgment be awarded. When the Judge his seat attaineth, And each hidden deed arraigneth, Nothing unavenged remaineth. What shall I, frail man, be pleading? Who for me be interceding, When the just are mercy needing? King of Majesty tremendous, Who dost free salvation send us, Fount of pity, then befriend us! Think, good Jesus, my salvation Cost thy wondrous Incarnation; Leave me not to reprobation! Faint and weary, thou hast sought me, On the cross of suffering bought me. Shall such grace be vainly brought me? Righteous Judge! for sin's pollution Grant thy gift of absolution, Ere the day of retribution. Guilty, now I pour my moaning, All my shame with anguish owning; Spare, O God, thy suppliant groaning! Thou the sinful woman savedst; Thou the dying thief forgavest; And to me a hope vouchsafest. Worthless are my prayers and sighing, Yet, good Lord, in grace complying, Rescue me from fires undying! With thy favoured sheep O place me; Nor among the goats abase me; But to thy right hand upraise me. While the wicked are confounded, Doomed to flames of woe unbounded, Call me with thy saints surrounded. Low I kneel, with heart submission, See, like ashes, my contrition; Help me in my last condition. Ah! that day of tears and mourning! From the dust of earth returning Man for judgment must prepare him; Spare, O God, in mercy spare him! Lord, all pitying, Jesus blest, Grant them thine eternal rest. Amen. Sing, O sing, this blessed morn

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 49 hymnals Lyrics: Sing, O sing, this blessed morn, Unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given, God himself comes down from heaven; Sing, O sing, this blessed morn, Jesus Christ today is born. God of God, and Light of Light, Comes with mercies infinite, Joining in a wondrous plan Heaven to earth and God to man. God with us, Emmanuel, Deigns for ever now to dwell; He on Adam's fallen race Sheds the fullness of his grace. God comes down that man may rise, Lifted by him to the skies; Christ is Son of man that we Sons of God in him may be. Forth in Thy Name, O Lord, I go

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 346 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Forth in Thy Name, O Lord, I go My daily labour to pursue; Thee, only Thee, resolved to know, In all I think, or speak, or do. 2 The task Thy wisdom hath assigned, O let me cheerfully fulfill; In all my works Thy presence find, And prove Thy good and perfect will. 3 Thee may I set at my right hand, Whose eyes my inmost substance see: And labour on at Thy command, And offer all my works to Thee. 4 Give me to bear Thy easy yoke, And every moment watch and pray; And still to things eternal look, And hasten to Thy glorious Day. 5 Fain would I still for Thee employ Whate'er Thy bounteous grace hath given, Would run my course with even joy, And closely walk with Thee to heaven. O very God of very God

Author: John Mason Neale Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 49 hymnals Lyrics: O very God of very God And very Light of Light, Whose feet this earth's dark valley trod, That so it might be bright; Our hopes are weak, our fears are strong, Thick darkness blinds our eyes; Cold is the night; thy people long That thou, their Sun, wouldst rise. And even now, though dull and gray, The east is brightening fast, And kindling to the perfect day, That never shall be past. O guide us till our path is done, And we have reached the shore Where thou, our everlasting Sun, Art shining evermore! We wait in faith, and turn our face To where the daylight springs, Till thou shalt come our gloom to chase, With healing in thy wings. Amen. Topics: Sundays after Epiphany Used With Tune: BANGOR

Let Thy Blood in mercy poured

Author: John Brownlie Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Appears in 24 hymnals Lyrics: Let thy Blood in mercy poured, Let thy gracious Body broken, Be to me, O gracious Lord, Of thy boundless love the token.
