George Lockwood

b. 1946 Person Name: George Lockwood, b. 1946 Scripture: Jeremiah 31:31-34 Translator of "Seek the Lord (Busquen a Dios)" in Oramos Cantando = We Pray In Song Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. Dan Damon

b. 1955 Person Name: Daniel Charles Damon Scripture: Jeremiah 31:31-34 Arranger of "WILD MOUNTAIN THYME" in Voices Together Daniel Charles Damon (b. 1955) is an internationally published writer of hymn texts and tunes and is Associate Editor of Hymnody for Hope Publishing Company, Carol Stream, Illinois. Damon is also a jazz pianist and has played in many hotels and clubs in the San Francisco Bay area. He holds degrees from Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois (BME, 1977) and Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California (MDiv, 1987). He is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church in the San Francisco Bay area and a life member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Several single-author collections of Damon's hymns have been published: Faith Will Sing (Carol Stream, 1993), The Sound of Welcome (Carol Stream, 1998), To the Thirsty World (Nashville, 2002), Fields of Mercy (Carol Stream, 2007), and Garden of Joy (Carol Stream, 2011). He collaborated with text writer Gracia Grindal in A Treasury of Faith: Lectionary Hymns Series A (Colfax. 2012). Damon's hymns have been included in several major hymnals and supplements. He has also written hymn translations from Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Shona languages, and, with Patrick Matsikenyiri, edited Njalo, A Collection of 16 Hymns in the African Tradition (Nashville, 1996). He has released three recordings of hymns, carols, and traditional songs, and a solo piano recording of jazz standards (available at www.damonstuneshop.com). Damon has presented his work at national conferences of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. Shirley Erena Murray

1931 - 2020 Scripture: Jeremiah 31:27-34 Author of "O Christ, Who by a Cross" in Moravian Book of Worship Shirley Erena Murray (b. Invercargill, New Zealand, 1931) studied music as an undergraduate but received a master’s degree (with honors) in classics and French from Otago University. Her upbringing was Methodist, but she became a Presbyterian when she married the Reverend John Stewart Murray, who was a moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Shirley began her career as a teacher of languages, but she became more active in Amnesty International, and for eight years she served the Labor Party Research Unit of Parliament. Her involvement in these organizations has enriched her writing of hymns, which address human rights, women’s concerns, justice, peace, the integrity of creation, and the unity of the church. Many of her hymns have been performed in CCA and WCC assemblies. In recognition for her service as a writer of hymns, the New Zealand government honored her as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the Queen’s birthday on 3 June 2001. Through Hope Publishing House, Murray has published three collections of her hymns: In Every Corner Sing (eighty-four hymns, 1992), Everyday in Your Spirit (forty-one hymns, 1996), and Faith Makes the Song (fifty hymns, 2002). The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust, for which she worked for a long time, has also published many of her texts (cf. back cover, Faith Makes the Song). In 2009, Otaga University conferred on her an honorary doctorate in literature for her contribution to the art of hymn writing. Thomas Pavlechko

b. 1962 Person Name: Thomas Pavlechko (b. 1962) Scripture: Jeremiah 31:32 Composer of "GRID" in Wonder, Love, and Praise PAVLECHKO, THOMAS (b. 1962) is the Cantor and Composer-in-Residence at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. Named the Emerging Hymn Tune Composer by HSUSC in 2002, his sacred music compositions, hymn tunes, choral, orchestral and concert band works are widely performed. He is the co-editor of the principal worship planning reference books of the Episcopal Church U.S.A, ,cite>Liturgical Music for the Revised Common Lectionary. His collection of over 600 Psalm settings, St. Martin’s Psalter, is published in two editions with Augsburg Fortress Publishers and St. James Music Press. Pavlechko is a graduate of the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, both in his native Ohio. Alfred M. Smith

1879 - 1971 Scripture: Jeremiah 31:27-34 Composer of "SURSUM CORDA" in Moravian Book of Worship Alfred Morton Smith (1879-1971) was born in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania (B.S. 1901) and Philadelphia Divinity School (B.D. 1905; S.T.B. 1911). An Episcopalian, Smith was ordained a deacon (1905) and a priest (1906). After a short time in Philadelphia and Long Beach, California, he served at St. Matthias Church, Los Angeles, for ten years. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Army during World War I, returning to Philadelphia in 1919, where he spent the remainder of his career. He retired in 1955. In 1963, Smith moved to Drium Moir, Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, and in 1968 to Brigantine, New Jersey, where he remained until his death. --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993
