When Will People Cease Their Fighting?

Author: Constance Cherry Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: The Church in the World Commitment: Peace and Justice Lyrics: 1 When will people cease their fighting? When will armies wage no war, nations conquer not their neighbour, weapons idle, used no more? When will guns and bombs be silent? When will captives be set free? All creation groans in longing for the world's true liberty. 2 Floods and earthquakes, drought and famine plague the world with awesome ill, but far greater is war's horror caused by human, stubborn will. Blest are those who, working, praying, purpose in their hearts to be instruments of peace, committed to the nations' harmony. 3 As we strive for peace with vigour, hoping to be shown the way, we are strengthened in the knowledge of a future, perfect day; for we know that deeper, richer peace is ours when Christ shall reign: then will all our swords be plowshares and God's children free from pain. Used With Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN

All My Hope on God Is Founded

Author: Joachim Neander; Robert Bridges Meter: 8.7.8.7.3.3.7 Appears in 72 hymnals Topics: The Church in the World Commitment: Trust Lyrics: 1 All my hope on God is founded; who doth still my trust renew: I through change and chance am guided, only good and only true. God unknown, God alone calls my heart eternally home. 2 Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown, betray our trust; what with care and toil is built up, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 Daily doth the almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow. God's desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand hand in hand; joy doth wait on God's command. 4 God's great goodness eye endureth, deepest wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light and life attending, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from God's store new-born worlds rise and adore. Used With Tune: MICHAEL

Jesus Calls Us

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 964 hymnals Topics: Church in the World Discipleship: Call First Line: Jesus calls us; o'er the tumult Lyrics: 1 Jesus calls us, o'er the tumult of our life's wild restless sea, day by day his clear voice sounding, saying, "Christian, follow me." 2 Long ago apostles heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred, leaving all for Jesus' sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, "Christian, love me more." 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these." 5 Jesus calls us: by your mercies, Saviour, may we hear your call, give our hearts to your obedience, serve and love you best of all.
