Davis, 1839-1897 Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: Temptation First Line: When weary with the ills of life Lyrics: 1 When weary with the ills of life, Its burdens and its acres, There is a balm, a sacred joy, ‘Tis found alone in prayer. Refrain: Alone in prayer, Alone in prayer; There is a balm, a sacred joy, ‘Tis found alone in prayer. 2 When tempted by the power of sin, That would the soul ensnare, There is a sure, a safe retreat, ‘Tis found alone in prayer. [Refrain] 3 There’s grace to help in time of need, A full supply is there, Go find it at the Master’s feet, In humble, heart-felt prayer. Sin has a thousand treacherous arts

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 80 hymnals Topics: Temptation Lyrics: 1 Sin has a thousand treacherous arts To practise on the mind; With flatt'ring looks she tempts our hearts, But leaves a sting behind. 2 With names of virtue she deceives The aged and the young; And while the heedless wretch believes, She makes his fetters strong. 3 She pleads for all the joys she brings, And gives a fair pretence; But cheats the soul of heavenly things, And chains it down to sense. 4 So on a tree divinely fair Grew the forbidden food; Our mother took the poison there, And tainted all her blood.

A pilgrim through this lonely world

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 90 hymnals Topics: Temptation Lyrics: 1 A pilgrim through this lonely world The blessed Saviour passed; A mourner all His life was He, A dying Lamb at last! 2 That tender heart, which felt for all, For all its life-blood gave; It found on earth no resting-place Save only in the grave! 3 Such was our Lord; and shall we fear The cross with all its scorn? Or love a faithless, evil world, That wreath'd His brow with thorn? 4 No: facing all its frowns or smiles, Like Him, obedient still, We homeward press, through storm or calm To Zion’s blessèd hill. 5 Dead to the world, with Him who died to win our hearts, our love, We, risen with our risen Head, In spirit dwell above.

Equip me for the war

Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 111 hymnals Topics: Temptation Lyrics: 1 Equip me for the war, And teach my hands to fight; My simple, upright heart prepare, And guide my words aright. 2 Control my ev'ry thought; And all my sins remove; Let all my works in Thee be wrought, Let all be wrought in love. 3 Oh, arm me with the mind, Meek Lamb, that was in Thee! And let enlighten'd zeal be join'd With perfect charity. 4 Oh, may I love like Thee! In all Thy footsteps tread; Thou hatest all inquity, But nothing Thou hast made. 5 Oh, may I learn the art, With meekness to reprove! And hate the sin with all my heart, But still the sinner love.

How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., b. 1944 Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Temptation And Trial Lyrics: 1 How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of hosts, to me! My thirsty soul desires and longs within thy courts to be; my very heart and flesh cry out, O living God, for thee. 2 Beside thine altars, gracious Lord, the swallows find a nest; how happy they who dwell with thee and praise thee without rest, and happy they whose hearts are set upon the pilgrims' quest. 3 They who go through the desert vale will find it filled with springs, and they shall climb from height to height till Zion's temple rings with praise to thee, in glory throned, Lord God, great King of kings. 4 One day within thy courts excels a thousand spent away; how happy they who keep thy laws nor from thy precepts stray, for thou shalt surely bless all those who live the words they pray. Optional stanza from Psalm 23: Goodness and mercy all my life shall surely follow me, and in God's house forevermore my dwelling place shall be; and in God's house forevermore my dwelling place shall be. Scripture: Psalm 84 Used With Tune: BROTHER JAMES' AIR Text Sources: Scottish Psalter, 1650 (sts. 1, 2 and opt. sts.)
