THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW

Author: Valdimar Briem; Charles Venn Pilcher Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Oft in death's shadowy vale, like screen of night Lyrics: Oft in death's shadowy vale, like screen of night, Before life's Sun the driving cloud-mists blow; No way lies open to the halls of light, The passes stand deep blocked by drifted snow; Lord, ever let Thy heavens unclouded shine; Lighten Thy pilgrim's eyes with light divine. Oft in the narrow rock-girt paths of life, The weary will would fail, the strength would flee; I stagger weakened by the unceasing strife, Fainting I fall, unless Thou succour me: What time the o'erburdened spirit dreads defeat, O champion her, Thou heavenly Paraclete. Oft mid the noisy tumult of the world No more I hear the angels' healing song, Only the torrents' threatening roar, where hurled In rapids time's swift stream is borne along: Lord, o'er the surge of waters rude and wild, Grant me to hear Thy call, "My child! My child!" When o'er mine eyelids steals the long last sleep, Thy face's unveiled glory would I see; The weary flesh seeks rest in slumber deep, With might, O let my spirit strengthened be. Earth's voices fade; deep mid the peace of heaven, Speak, Lord, the assuring words, "Arise, forgiven!"

O Glorious Day

Author: J. R. Peacey (1896-1971) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O glorious day when God's love overflowed Lyrics: 1 O glorious day when God's love overflowed and all its beauty on the earth bestowed; the Spirit gave all creatures life and health and on them breathed the life of God's own self. In all creation, in each tiny flower, in every life we see God's living power. 2 More glorious still that day of storm and flame when God on Sinai's mount to Moses came; when Israel, from the waters brought ashore, received its calling and God's holy law. For on that day of God, the great I AM, the spirit on the chosen people came. 3 Most wonderful of all that holy dawn in which the Saviour of the world was born! The Spirit rest on a Hebrew maid and God in human form came to our aid. Then, Holy Spirit, your great love excelled when we our God in flesh and blood beheld. 4 Christ rose from death, victorious over sin; the ascended Lord now reigns, the world to win; and on the church that it may witness give, God's love was poured, that through it all might live. On this fresh Pentecost, life-giving Lord, come, spread through us your saving love abroad. Topics: Pentecost Scripture: Genesis 1:1-5 Used With Tune: YORKSHIRE

Passion-week Memories Sacred and Blest

Author: Ludvig Holmes Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Passion-week memories sacred and blest, Speak to my soul now of stillness and rest; Slowly we go to Gethsemane's dale; Show me the sufferer trembling and pale, Treading forsaken a path full of thorns, Loving the world, which in turn only scorns. 2 Now I perceive Him in shadows of night, Putting the powers of darkness to flight, Crushed 'neath the load of the sin of the world, Death and damnation around Him are hurled. Thorn-crowned and scourged still the sacrificed Lamb, Lifting His brow, says: "A King yet I am." 3 Show me the cross where He patiently died, There in its shadow myself will I hide, There will I hide His victor4ious word, Hear Him exclaim, "It is finished", my Lord, There will I praise for His mercy and grace; Suffering and dying He stood in my place. Amen. Topics: Lent Used With Tune: HELIGA MINNEN I FASTELAGSTID
