Louisa M. R. Stead

1850 - 1917 Scripture: Psalm 86:1-10 Author of "Cuán dulce es confiar" in Celebremos Su Gloria Louisa (Louise) Maria Rouse Stead Wodehouse b. Dover, Kent, 1 February 1846 [registered Louisa Maria Rouse, but often known as Louise] d. Penkridge, Southern Rhodesia, 18 January 1917 She grew up in England, in Kent and Sussex, becoming governess to a family in Lyminge, Kent, before emigrating to America, c. 1871. While living in Cincinnati, Ohio, she attended a camp meeting in Urbana, Ohio, and wrote her first hymn, ‘Precious Saviour, thou hast saved me’, which was published in Winnowed Hymns, 1873, with music by Dora Boole. In September 1873 she married George Stead, of Hempstead, Long Island, at St Paul Methodist Episcopal Church, Cincinnati, and moved to Hempstead. Her verses, ‘Saved from the power and the bondage of sin’ were published in The Advocate of Christian Holiness, August 1875. She was apparently in England from April to July 1876, with their infant daughter, Louise, when her husband drowned in Hempstead Bay in May 1876, while saving the life of his little boy (a son from his previous marriage). In 1880, she was still living in Hempstead with Louise (aged 5), but shortly afterwards went to South Africa, where she married Robert Wodehouse in Port Elizabeth in January 1882. Her best known-hymn, ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus’, with music by William J. Kirkpatrick, was published in Songs of Triumph, 1882. They served as missionaries in Africa for about 15 years, before returning to Long Island, USA, where he was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at East Meadow for several years. They returned to Africa in January 1901, to work in Umtali, Rhodesia. After retiring in 1911, she lived near Mutambara mission station, fifty miles from Umtali. Her daughter Louise (sometimes known as Lillie), followed her mother to Africa, where she married the Rev. David A. Carson, and was able to care for her mother in her later years. Vicente P. Mendoza

1875 - 1955 Person Name: Vicente Mendoza Scripture: Psalm 86:1-10 Translator of "Cuán dulce es confiar" in Celebremos Su Gloria Vicente Mendoza Born: December 24, 1875, Guadalajara, Mexico. Died: 1955, Mexico City, Mexico. Mendoza studied initially under Don Aurelio Ortega. At age of 11 he went to work in a Protestant print shop in Mexico City and helped produce El Evangelista Mexicano (The Mexican Evangelist) for the Methodist Church of the South; he rose to become its director for 17 years. Looking to improve himself, Mendoza entered a night school for workers, but later feeling the call to preach the Gospel, he entered the Presbyterian Seminary in Mexico City. When the seminary closed temporarily, Mendoza entered the Methodist Institute of Puebla, where he finished the course in theology. In 1898 he became a member of the Annual Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he belonged to the Southern Methodist Conference of California. William J. Kirkpatrick

1838 - 1921 Scripture: Psalm 86:1-10 Composer of "TRUST IN JESUS" in Celebremos Su Gloria William J. Kirkpatrick (b. Duncannon, PA, 1838; d. Philadelphia, PA, 1921) received his musical training from his father and several other private teachers. A carpenter by trade, he engaged in the furniture business from 1862 to 1878. He left that profession to dedicate his life to music, serving as music director at Grace Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Kirkpatrick compiled some one hundred gospel song collections; his first, Devotional Melodies (1859), was published when he was only twenty-one years old. Many of these collections were first published by the John Hood Company and later by Kirkpatrick's own Praise Publishing Company, both in Philadelphia. Bert Polman

Carl Gustav Boberg

Gustav Holst

1874 - 1934 Scripture: Psalm 86 Harmonizer of "GENEVAN 86" in Rejoice in the Lord Gustav Holst (b. Chelteham, Gloucestershire, England, September 21, 1874, d. London, England, May 25, 1934) was a renowned British composer and musician. Having studied at Cheltenham Grammar School, he soon obtained a professional position as an organist, and later as choirmaster. In 1892, Holst composed a two-act operetta, which so impressed his father that he borrowed the money to send Holst to the Royal College of Music. Severe neuritis in his right hand later caused him to give up the keyboard, and Holst turned to the trombone and composing. In 1895 Holst met Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the two became lifelong friends. Vaughan Williams helped Holst land his first job as a singing teacher. Holst became very interested in Indian and Hindu culture, and composed a number of operas translated from Sanksrit myths. These were not received well in England, however. Ralph Carmichael

1927 - 2021 Scripture: Psalm 86:7 Author of "Reach Out to Jesus" in Hymns of Faith Ralph Carmichael was born May 27, 1927, in Quincy, Ill. to Rev. Richard and Adelle Carmichael. A graduate of Southern California Bible College (now Vanguard University), he became head of the school’s music department in his early 20s. His “Campus Christian Hour” that aired on KHJ-TV in Los Angeles, featuring his college band and singers with big band treatments of hymns and gospel songs, won an Emmy in 1951. Other early work involved serving as minister of music for Temple Baptist and Calvary Assembly churches, arranging and conducting musical scores for religious radio shows as well as for numerous sacred artists. Ralph’s musical talents have given us over 300 gospel songs, including such favorites as “The Savior Is Waiting,” “There Is a Quiet Place,” “Reach Out to Jesus,” and “He’s Everything to Me” to name a few. His songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, The Carpenters, George Beverly Shea, Bill Gaither, and hundreds of other artists. Ralph is recognized as the Father of Contemporary Christian Music because of his focus on creating religious music for the new generation of the 1960’s and beyond. In 1968 he founded Light Records and Lexicon Music Publishing to promote new Christian artists and composers in addition to his own music, including projects that were considered too risky for mainstream labels. He also served for several years as president of the Gospel Music Association. Ralph told his life story in his autobiography, “He’s Everything to Me,” that was published in 1986. His creative arranging skills were quickly noticed by the pop world, and he recorded with numerous big-name artists including Frankie Laine, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Clint Walker and Jack Jones. Ralph is well known for his many collaborations with Nat King Cole, including the Christmas album and Nat’s final sessions in 1964. Ralph also became a primary arranger & conductor for pianist Roger Williams, including 1965’s hit “Born Free.” Ralph wrote numerous movie scores for such diverse classics as “The Blob,” “4D Man” and “The Cross and the Switchblade.” For many years he wrote film music for the Billy Graham organization including “Mr. Texas,” “Oiltown, U.S.A.,” “The Restless Ones,” “For Pete’s Sake” and “His Land” and many others. For about 25 years, Ralph toured with his own big band. He received the Dove Award in 1994 for his CD “Strike Up the Band.” His last major studio project was to record his symphonic arrangements of 43 great hymns with the London Symphony and Choir. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1985 and the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2001. Ralph enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was passionate about the music that flowed from his soul and created it as the consummate professional. He cared deeply for his family and friends, and he lived out his cowboy dreams with the many horses that he owned along the way. He laughed easily, loved deeply, enjoyed a good joke or a prank, and charmed anyone who came across his path. Undergirding it all was his abiding faith in his Lord Jesus Christ.

1914 - 1987 Person Name: Roberto C. Savage Scripture: Psalm 86:8-13 Arranger of "VENID PASTORES" in Celebremos Su Gloria Robert Carlson Savage was born in Wisconsin in 1914. He served as a missionary in Colombia and then worked 24 years for HCJB radio in Quito, Ecuador. He edited and compiled several songbooks and hymnals, including Himnos d Fe y Alabanza in 1966.
