Johnson Oatman, Jr.

1856 - 1922 Person Name: Rev. Johnson Oatman, Jr. Author of "The Hallelujah Song" in Hymns of Glory No. 2 Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. His father was an excellent singer, and it always delighted the son to sit by his side and hear him sing the songs of the church. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton, N. J., under the firm name of Johnson Oatman & Son. Since the death of his father, he has for the past fifteen years been in the life insurance business, having charge of the business of one of the great companies in Mt. Holly, N. J., where he resides. He has written over three thousand hymns, and no gospel song book is considered as being complete unless it contains some of his hymns. Anne K. LeCroy

Arthur Hutchings

1906 - 1989 Person Name: Arthur Hutchings, b. 1906 Harmonizer of "SOLEMNIS HAEC FESTIVITAS" in The Hymnal 1982 Arthur James Bramwell Hutchings (1906–1989) was an English musicologist, composer, and professor of music at the University of Durham, England. He wrote extensively on topics as varied as nineteenth-century English liturgical composition, Schubert, Purcell, Edmund Rubbra, and baroque concertos; but his most famous book was the Companion to Mozart's Piano Concertos, published in 1948 and often reissued since. Among his other books are The Invention and Composition of Music and Church Music in the Nineteenth Century. During the late 1970s his articles on music regularly appeared in the monthly magazine Records and Recording. His compositions include the Seasonal Preludes for organ, the overture Oriana Triumphans, the opera Marriage à la Mode, and the operetta The Plumber's Arms. Among his choral works are Hosanna to the Son of David, God is Gone Up, Grant Them Rest, and the Communion Service on Russian Themes. William Allen

1784 - 1868 Author of "Praise to God, ye righteous, sing" Allen, William, D.D., born at Pittsfield, Mass., 1784, graduated at Harvard, 1802. He became Pastor of Pittsfield, 1810; President of Dartmouth University, 1817, and of Bowdoin College, 1820-1839. He died at Northampton, 1868. He published the American Biographical and Historical Dictionary, 1809; Psalms and Hymns, 1835. The latter contains ver¬sions of all the Psalms, and 200 original hymns. Some of the hymns, especially those about slavery, are curious. Five are found in Campbell's Comprehensive Hymn Book, Lond., 1837. His compositions have almost entirely passed out of use. [Rev. F. M.
