Person Name: Wharton Buchanan Smith Author of "Raised between the Earth and Heaven" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Smith. Wharton Buchanan, M.A., was born March 15, 1848, and educated at King's College, London (where he was McCaul and Trench prizeman in 1870), and Trinity College, Dublin, B.A., 1878; M.A. 1883. Taking Holy Orders in 1871 he was from 1871-73 Curate of St. Mark's, Surbiton; and from 1873-83 of St. Peter's, Eaton Square, London. In 1883 he became Chaplain to the Bishop of Grahamstown. He is the author of two hymns in Thring's Collection, 1882: "My God, I praise Thee for the light returning" (Morning), which appeared in the Parish Magazine of St. Peter's, Eaton Square; and "Raised between the earth and heaven" (Dedication of Church Bells). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Buried: Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland. Loizeaux was a manager with the Baltimore Consolidated Light, Heat and Power Company. He was involved with the Baltimore School of the Bible, and edited the monthly Christian magazine Help and Food. William John Downes

1892 - 1987 Translator of "Amo Dia, tutsupera" in TTT-Himnaro Cigneta An English Congregationalist minister, Downes was a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Western College in the University of Bristol (UK), a member of the board of KELI, and a member of the Esperanto Academy, as well as a member of the editorial committee that produced Adoru Kantante. 44 of his works appeared in AK, and 36 in Adoru. Particularly noteworthy for the quantity and quality of his original hymn texts in Esperanto.

Edward Hodges

1796 - 1867 Person Name: Edward Hodges (1796-1867) Adapter of "BEECHER" in Songs of Grace Born: July 20, 1796, Bristol, England. Died: September 1, 1867, Clifton, Bristol, England. Buried: Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Stanton Drew (about eight miles south of Bristol). Hodges’ musical gift showed itself at an early age; by 1819, he was playing the organ at St. James’ Church in Bristol, and at St. Nicholas’, 1821-1838. He also had an interesting mechanical bent, and spurred several technical improvements in organ design. He composed a number of services and anthem pieces, and Cambridge University awarded him a doctorate in music in 1825. Hodges eventually emigrated, accepting a post at the cathedral in Toronto, Canada, in 1838. The next year, he became music director at Trinity Parish in New York City. He became the organist at Trinity Church when it opened in 1846 (the church had its organ built to his specifications). He retired for health reasons in 1859, and returned to his native England in 1863.
