Clarence M. Seamans

1869 - 1939 Person Name: C. M. S. Author of "Consecration Prayer" in Carols of Hope Seamans, Clarence Milton. (Johnston, Rhode Island, February 8, 1869--July 21, 1939, Whitman, Massachusetts). Direct descendant of Roger Williams, the founder of the Rhode Island Colony. Seamans married Annie May Bennett on October 8, 1890; they had four children. Ordained to the ministry of the Advent Christian Church, he served their churches in Pascoag and River Point, R.I.; Dover, New Hampshire; Chelsea, Springfield, and Boston, Mass.; and Rutland, Vermont. His last 19 years were spent as pastor in Whitman, Mass. For many years, he was secretary of the Massachusetts Advent Christian Conference and of the Marion (Mass.) Campmeeting Association. He was also active in the Alton Bay (N.H.) Campmeeting Association. He contributed many articles to his denomination's periodical, The World's Crisis. He was an ardent pastor, preaching the Christian life and the imminent Second Coming, subjects reflected in his hymns. In addition to writing and composing a number of hymns and tunes, he was a joint editor of the Golden Sheaf (1902) and Carols of Hope (1906). --Russell J. Cross and Leonard Ellinwood, DNAH Archives

George F. LeJeune

1841 - 1904 Composer of "HOLY SPIRIT" in The Hymnal George Fitz-Curwood Le Jeune, 1841-1904 Born: June 18, 1841, London, England. Died: April 11, 1904, Staten Island, New York. Buried: Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, New York. Le Jeune studied music under Joseph Barnby and George Macfarren in London. In 1863, he moved to Montréal, Canada, where he continued his studies with George Carter. He later moved to America, playing the organ in churches in Hartford, Connecticut, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. J. W. Cummings

1824 - 1866 Person Name: Jeremiah Cummings, 1814-1866 Author (st. 1) of "Immaculate Mary" in Worship (3rd ed.) Cummings, Rev. Jeremiah William (Washington, D.C., April 1, 1824--January 4, 1866, New York, New York). After his ordination, he studied at the College of the Propaganda in Rome where he received his doctorate. On his return to the U.S., he was assigned to St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, N.Y., and in 1848 was named pastor of the newly established parish of St. Stephen's, New York City. He was the author of several books on religious subjects. Of these his Songs for Schools (1860, with a second edition in 1862), contain his hymns with the exception of four or five so designated these are all original. Those in common use include: "My God whatever through thy church" is contained in St. Gregory and the La Salle hymnals. David Mowbray

b. 1938 Person Name: David Mowbray, b. 1938 Author of "Come to us, creative Spirit" in Singing the Faith David Mowbray (b. 1938) was born in Wallington, Surrey, England. He attended Dulwich College, Fitzwilliam, Cambridge where he read English. He gained an MA at Trinity in Bristol and a BD at London (External). Ordained in the Church of England, he was a curate at St. Giles in Northampton and at St. Mary's in Walford. Appointed Vicar of Broxborne, Herts in 1970 in 1984, he became Vicar of All Saints, Hertfordshire. In 1991 he became Vicar of St. Matthew's Darley Abbey, Derby, where he serves to this day. He has been writing hymns since 1977 and most of his texts are represented by Jubilate Hymns. Three of his hymn texts have been included in Hope's new hymnal Worship & Rejoice (2001). --www.hopepublishing.com
