Laurence Housman

1865 - 1959 Person Name: Laurence Housman (1865-1959) Scripture: Isaiah 58 Author of "Father, Eternal, Ruler of Creation" in Common Praise (1998) Housman, Lawrence, author and artist, was born July 18, 1867, at Bromsgrove, Worcs. His devotional poetry is principally in his Spikenard, 1898, and Bethlehem, 1902. To the English Hymnal, 1906, he contributed eight translations (142, 188, 191, 228, 229, 230, 231, 234); also three original hymns, with a fourth previously published, viz.:— 1. Died: February 20, 1959, Glastonbury, Somerset, England. Buried: St. Mary’s, Bathwick, Smallcombe, near Bath. Housman studied art at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He had great success as an illustrator, but when his eyesight began to fail, he turned to writing books and plays. He wrote 80 books during his lifetime. He often seemed to fall afoul of the censors, though, for religious and political reasons. A committed socialist and pacifist, in 1907, he helped found the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage. He was also an honorary associate of the Women Writers’ Suffrage League. Charles F. Gounod

1818 - 1893 Person Name: Charles Gounod Scripture: Isaiah 58:11 Composer of "REDEMPTION" in The Presbyterian Book of Praise Charles F. Gounod (b. Paris, France, 1818; d. St. Cloud, France, 1893) was taught initially by his pianist mother. Later he studied at the Paris Conservatory, won the "Grand Prix de Rome" in 1839, and continued his musical training in Vienna, Berlin, and Leipzig. Though probably most famous for his opera Faust (1859) and other instrumental music (including his Meditation sur le Prelude de Bach, to which someone added the Ave Maria text for soprano solo), Gounod also composed church music-four Masses, three Requiems, and a Magnificat. His smaller works for church use were published as Chants Sacres. When he lived in England (1870-1875), Gounod became familiar with British cathedral music and served as conductor of what later became the Royal Choral Society. Bert Polman

B. attended Mount Lebanon Academy, Louisiana; Louisiana College, Pineville, Louisiana; the Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas; the Siegel-Myers Correspondence School of Music, Chicago, Illinois (BM.1922); and the Bush Conservatory of Music, Chicago. Oklahoma Baptist University awarded him an honorary MusD degree in 1942. McKinney served as music editor at the Robert H. Coleman company in Dallas, Texas (1918–35). In 1919, after several months in the army, McKinney returned to Fort Worth, where Isham E. Reynolds asked him to join the faculty of the School of Sacred Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He taught at the seminary until 1932, then pastored in at the Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth (1931–35). In 1935, McKinney became music editor for the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee. Frederick C. Atkinson

1841 - 1896 Person Name: Frederick C. Atkinson, 1841-1897 Scripture: Isaiah 58:13-14 Composer of "MORECAMBE" in The Hymnal Born: August 21, 1841, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Died: November 30, 1896, East Dereham, Norfolk, England. As a boy Atkinson was a chorister and assistant organist at Norwich Cathedral. In 1867 he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from Cambridge and then served as organist and choirmaster in St. Luke's Church, Manningham, Bradford. He also held that position at Norwich Cathedral and at St. Mary's Parish Church in Lewisham. Atkinson wrote hymn tunes, anthems, and complete Anglican services, as well as songs and piano pieces. Jose Antonio Olivar

b. 1939 Person Name: J. A. Olivar Scripture: Isaiah 58:6-9 Author of "Cuando El Pobre" in Worship in Song José Antonio Olivar is also a writer and journalist Efe Agency and a very dear person in Lastres. The son of a seafaring family, Olivier went through difficult times during his childhood. He lost his parents and four brothers and faced the harsh post-war period as an orphan. Hosted by his grandmother, he studied at the Seminary of Covadonga and Oviedo and he built a career of great prestige and recognition throughout the country. He has won several national awards for poetry and has worked as a journalist in popular newspapers and national agencies. In his journalistic work out the last time as deputy director of the magazine "Hello!". Olivar printed in this genre of magazines and friendly style compatible with both newsworthy. He has traveled around the world, interviewing and making friends with the most diverse personalities from all fields of social life, art and politics. It also cites his role as music composer with known letters to both religious and secular songs. Miguel Manzano

b. 1934 Scripture: Isaiah 58:6-9 Author of "Cuando El Pobre" in Worship in Song Miguel Manzano is a Spanish composer and singer. He was born in Aillamor de Cardozo near the border with Portugal. Miguel began his religious musical career at the age of 8 as cantor at the Cathedral of Zamora, Spain. He studied solfeg, piano, organ and harmonium with the renowned teacher, Gaspar Arabaolaza. Later on, he began studies at the Higher School of Sacred Music in Madrid, where he studied Rhythm and Gregorian Modality, as well as Harmony and Religious Polyphony. He furthered his studies of language and musical rhythm at the Catholic Institute of Paris. Miguel's internationally recognized music has been chosen to complete the repertoire of the National Liturgical Hymnal of the Espicopal Committee of Spanish Liturgy.
