1840 - 1882 Person Name: Rev. J. B. Atchinson Hymnal Number: 31 Author of "Let Him In" in Healing Waters Atchinson, Jonathan Bush, born at Wilson, New York, Feb. 17, 1840, and "licensed as a Methodist Preacher," Sept. 6, 1874. Of his hymns the following are the best known:— 1. Behold the stone is rolled away. [Easter.] This was Mr. Atchinson's first hymn. It appeared in the Sunday School Times, Dec. 1874. It is not in use in Great Britain. 2. Fully persuaded, Lord, I believe. [Faith.] Written in 1874 or 1875, and first published in Gospel Hymns, No. 1. It is given in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, No. 149, with music by W. F. Sherwin. 3. I have read of a beautiful city. [Heaven.] Written about the same time as the former, and published in Gospel Hymns. It is given in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, No. 403, with music by O. F. Presbrey. 4. O crown of rejoicing that's waiting for me. [The Reward .] This hymn is also in I. D. V. O. Fossett

1904 - 1964 Hymnal Number: 15 Arranger of "[I've seen the lightning flashing]" in Healing Waters Died: December 20, 1964. Buried: Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas. A native of DeKalb County, Alabama, Fossett attended his first Gospel Music School at age 12. At age 16, he attended Thomas Mosley’s Normal School. By age 19, he began singing and playing in a quartet. By 1937, he was teaching in High Point, North Carolina, where he married Katherine Strother. Three years later, he joined the Chattanooga, Tennessee, office of the Stamps-Baxter music publishers. G. H. Cook

1864 - 1948 Hymnal Number: 2 Composer of "[Walking in sunlight, all of my journey]" in Healing Waters Rv George Harrison Cook USA 1864-1948. Not much is known about him. Converted at age 14, Cook was a preacher, singer, composer and involved with church music. He wrote the tune “Sunlight” and asked his friend, Harry Zelley, to write words for it, which he did, in 1899. He died in Ocean Grove, NJ. John Perry

Chester G. Allen

1838 - 1878 Hymnal Number: 14 Composer of "[Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!]" in Healing Waters Chester G. Allen was known as a teacher, composer and musical writer. He taught music in Cleveland, Ohio public schools. He also edited and compiled collections of music for schools and churches, containing many of his own compositions. Nancy Naber

J. Edwin McConnell

1892 - 1954 Person Name: J. E. M. Hymnal Number: 16 Author of ""Whosoever" Meaneth Me" in Healing Waters McConnell attended the Webb Preparatory School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri. He worked with his father (former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) in evangelism meetings for some time, playing the piano, singing, and directing the choir. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: W. E. Witter Hymnal Number: 74 Author of "While Jesus Whispers to You" in Healing Waters Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1859 - 1931 Person Name: F. M. G. Hymnal Number: 20 Author of "An Old Account Settled" in Healing Waters Born: March 1, 1859, Birmingham, Illinois. Died: August 25, 1931, Greensboro, Georgia. Buried: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Greensboro, Georgia. Graham was an ordained minister in the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church and served as District Superintendent in northern Georgia from around 1895 to about 1915. John S. Norris

1844 - 1907 Person Name: J. S. Norris Hymnal Number: 61 Composer of "[I can hear my Savior calling]" in Healing Waters Rv John Samuel Norris United Kingdom/USA 1844-1907. Born at West Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK, he emigrated to the US when young and attended school in Canada. He was ordained a Methodist minister in Oshawa, ON, in 1868. Over the next decade he pastored at churches in Canada, NY, and WI. He switched to the Congregationalist denomination in 1878, serving churches in Mondovi, Shullsburg, and Hixton, WI, and Grand Rapids, MI. From 1882 -1901 he held pastorates at Ames, Webster City, Parkersburg, Peterson, and Tripoli, IA.. He died in Chicago, IL. John Perry

L. L. Pickett

1859 - 1928 Person Name: Rev. L. L. Pickett Hymnal Number: 1 Composer of "[O the joy of sins forgiv'n!]" in Healing Waters Rv Leander Lycurgus Pickett USA 1859-1928. Born at Burnsville, MS, he became a Methodist evangelist. He held meetings in several states and at Holiness campgrounds. After marrying Ludie, they served pastorates in northeast TX, and Columbia, SC, before moving to Wilmore, KY. Pickett married Pruvy Melviney Dorough in 1878, and they had a son, James, in 1880. After her death in 1887, he married Ludie in 1888. He was a renowned speaker, leader, minister, author, hymnwriter, and patriot, prominent in the Holiness Movement, and helped found Asbury College (now University), at Wilmore, KY, where he also served as the financial agent of the board of trustees for many years. The Picketts boarded m,inistry students attending Asbury, among whom was missionary E Stanley Jones. In 1905 a student prayer meeting at the Pickett home spilled out to the Asbury campus in a revival that spread around the town of Wilmore. Between 1891 and 1926 Pickett published 11 song books, some with others, including John Sweney, William J Kirkpatrick, John Bryant, Martin Knapp, Elisha A Hoffman, Burke Culpepper, William Marks, Benjamin Butts, and Robert McNeill.
