James John Cummins

1795 - 1867 Person Name: James J. Cummings Topics: Testimonio Author of "Con cánticos, Señor" in Mil Voces para Celebrar Cummins, James John, son of a merchant in Cork, Ireland, was born in Cork, May 5, 1795. In 1834 he removed to London, and was for many years a Director of the Union Bank of Australia. He died at Wildecroft, Buckland, Surrey, Nov. 23, 1867. He devoted much time to the study of Hebrew and Theology. He prepared for the use of his children in their preparation for Confirmation, Seals of the Covenant Opened in the Sacraments. This work, including several hymns and poems, was published in 1839. The hymns and other poetical pieces were also published in 1839 as Poetical Meditations and Hymns by the Author of The Seals of the Covenant Opened. In 1849 this work was republished with additions as Hymns, Meditations, and other Poems. The title on the cover of this work is Lyra Evangelica, and by this title it is usually known. John L. Bell

b. 1949 Person Name: John L. Bell, b. 1949 Topics: Testimonio Arranger of "[Ore mboriajú]" in Santo, Santo, Santo John Bell (b. 1949) was born in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, intending to be a music teacher when he felt the call to the ministry. But in frustration with his classes, he did volunteer work in a deprived neighborhood in London for a time and also served for two years as an associate pastor at the English Reformed Church in Amsterdam. After graduating he worked for five years as a youth pastor for the Church of Scotland, serving a large region that included about 500 churches. He then took a similar position with the Iona Community, and with his colleague Graham Maule, began to broaden the youth ministry to focus on renewal of the church’s worship. His approach soon turned to composing songs within the identifiable traditions of hymnody that began to address concerns missing from the current Scottish hymnal: "I discovered that seldom did our hymns represent the plight of poor people to God. There was nothing that dealt with unemployment, nothing that dealt with living in a multicultural society and feeling disenfranchised. There was nothing about child abuse…,that reflected concern for the developing world, nothing that helped see ourselves as brothers and sisters to those who are suffering from poverty or persecution." [from an interview in Reformed Worship (March 1993)] That concern not only led to writing many songs, but increasingly to introducing them internationally in many conferences, while also gathering songs from around the world. He was convener for the fourth edition of the Church of Scotland’s Church Hymnary (2005), a very different collection from the previous 1973 edition. His books, The Singing Thing and The Singing Thing Too, as well as the many collections of songs and worship resources produced by John Bell—some together with other members of the Iona Community’s “Wild Goose Resource Group,” —are available in North America from GIA Publications. Marty Nystrom

Person Name: Martin Nystrom Topics: Testimonio Author of "As the Deer" in Praise y Adoración Martin J. Nystrom, a songwriter, was born in 1956 in Seattle, Washington, to a mother who grew up in the Christian Reformed Church; his father was brought up in the Evangelical Covenant Church. After graduating from Oral Roberts University with a degree in music education, Nystrom worked as a music director for the New York branch of Christ for the Nations. More recently he has served as a song development manager for Integrity Music, for whom he has written more than seventy songs. Nystrom is featured as worship leader on five Integrity "Hosanna" tapes. He also gives presentations at numerous conferences throughout the world. --www.reformedworship.org

Alfredo Colom

1904 - 1971 Person Name: Alfredo Colom M. Topics: Testimonio del Cristiano Author of "América será para Cristo" in Celebremos Su Gloria Alfredo Colom was a prolific songwriter from Guatemala. He held public office, but ruined his life with alcohol and was considering suicide when an indigenous Guatemalan Christian gave him a New Testament. Eventually he surrendered his life to Christ serving in music and evangelism on the radio and in travels throughout Central and South America. Footnote from Singing the New Testament, hymn #36

Speros Demetrios Athans

1883 - 1969 Person Name: S. D. Athans Topics: Testimonio Translator of "Open My Eyes, That I May See (Abre mis ojos a la luz)" in Santo, Santo, Santo Speros Demetrios Athans was born 1883 in Turkey. Raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, Athans left home at age 15, after his father’s death. He spent two years on the island of Corfu, Greece, and two more in Egypt, then went to Great Britain, where he worked as a sailor. In 1903 he went to America, and during immigration processing, someone gave him a New Testament in Greek. A year later, he joined a Nazarene church in Chicago, Illinois. He then enrolled in a Bible school and university. While in school in California, he began to study Spanish and to work with the Latino community. In 1910 he decided to work in evangelism. Dan Damon

b. 1955 Topics: Testimonio Translator (English) of "Momento novo (Momento nuevo) (In This New Moment)" in Santo, Santo, Santo Daniel Charles Damon (b. 1955) is an internationally published writer of hymn texts and tunes and is Associate Editor of Hymnody for Hope Publishing Company, Carol Stream, Illinois. Damon is also a jazz pianist and has played in many hotels and clubs in the San Francisco Bay area. He holds degrees from Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois (BME, 1977) and Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California (MDiv, 1987). He is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church in the San Francisco Bay area and a life member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Several single-author collections of Damon's hymns have been published: Faith Will Sing (Carol Stream, 1993), The Sound of Welcome (Carol Stream, 1998), To the Thirsty World (Nashville, 2002), Fields of Mercy (Carol Stream, 2007), and Garden of Joy (Carol Stream, 2011). He collaborated with text writer Gracia Grindal in A Treasury of Faith: Lectionary Hymns Series A (Colfax. 2012). Damon's hymns have been included in several major hymnals and supplements. He has also written hymn translations from Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Shona languages, and, with Patrick Matsikenyiri, edited Njalo, A Collection of 16 Hymns in the African Tradition (Nashville, 1996). He has released three recordings of hymns, carols, and traditional songs, and a solo piano recording of jazz standards (available at www.damonstuneshop.com). Damon has presented his work at national conferences of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. Born at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, he attended Gainford Academy, Rotherham College, Nottingham Institute, and Cheshunt College. He became pastor at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire. Leaving the clerical field due to ill health, he conducted evangelistic campaigns in Britain (1874-82) and worldwide (1882-1889). An author, he wrote a number of books. He published a hymn book, “Hymns of consecration and faith”,and “Sacred songs for missions, prayer, and praise meetings” (1876). He died at Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. John Perry
