H. S. Cutler

1825 - 1902 Person Name: Henry S. Cutler Hymnal Number: 33 Composer of "[The Son of God goes forth to war]" in Songs of Praise and Service Henry Stephen Cutler (b. Boston, MA, 1824; d. Boston, 1902) studied music in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1844. He moved to England, where he listened with interest to the cathedral choirs and came under the influence of the Oxford Movement. Returning to Boston in 1846, Cutler became organist of the Episcopal Church of the Advent and formed a choir of men and boys, to whom he introduced the wearing of liturgical robes. When he took a position at Trinity Church in New York City, he removed women from the choir and used the occasion of a visit by the Prince of Wales to the church to introduce his newly vested men and boys' choir. He also moved the choir from the gallery to the chancel and initiated the chanting of the psalms and the singing of part of the worship service. Cutler compiled The Psalter, with Chants (1858) and published The Trinity Psalter (1864) and Trinity Anthems (1865). Bert Polman

Phoebe Palmer

1807 - 1874 Person Name: Mrs. Phoebe Palmer Hymnal Number: 53 Author of "Blessed Bible! How I Love It!" in Songs of Praise and Service Palmer, Phoebe, an American Methodist, b. 1807, and d. in 1874, wrote "Blessed Bible! how I love thee" (Holy Scriptures), and “O! when shall I sweep through the gates" (Heaven Anticipated). George Rundle Prynne

1818 - 1903 Person Name: George R. Prynne Hymnal Number: 142 Author of "Jesus, Meek and Gentle" in Songs of Praise and Service George Rundle Prynne studied at S. Catherine's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. 1839, M.A. 1861. He was ordained Deacon in 1841, and Priest in 1842. He afterwards became Curate of S. Andrew's, Clifton, and entered upon his present incumbency of S. Peter's, Plymouth, in 1848. He has published some sermons and manuals. --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872. ================ Prynne, George Rundle, M.A., son of John Allen Prynne, was born at West Looe, Cornwall, Aug. 23, 1818, and educated at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, B.A., 1839; M.A. 1861. He took Holy Orders in 1841, and became Vicar of St. Peter's, Plymouth, in 1848. He has published Parochial Sermons, 1846; Plain Parochial Sermons, 1856; another series, 1876; The Dying Soldier's Visions, and Other Poems and Hymns, 1881, &c. He also published Hymnal suited for the Services of the Church, 1858. His most popular hymn is “Jesu, meek and gentle,” p. 591, ii. His hymns "The day is done; O God the Son" (Evening), and "Thy glory fills the heavens" (The Glory of the Father), have also been included in a few collections. Thomas J. Potter

1828 - 1873 Person Name: Thos. J. Potter Hymnal Number: 85 Author of "Brightly Gleams Our Banner" in Songs of Praise and Service Potter, Thomas Joseph, was born at Scarborough in 1827, and joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1847, and subsequently took Holy Orders. For many years he filled the Chair of Pulpit Eloquence and English Literature in the Foreign Missionary College of All Hallows, Dublin. He published The Spoken Word; or, The Art of Extemporary Preaching; Sacred Eloquence, or, The Theory and Practice of Preaching; and The Pastor and his People; together with several tales. He translated the Vesper hymns in the Catholic Psalmist; contributed to the Holy Family Hymns, 1860; and published Legends, Lyrics, and Hymns, 1862. His most widely-known hymn is "Brightly gleams our banner" (q.v.). Several of his hymns and translations are in use in Roman Catholic hymnbooks for Missions and Schools. He died at Dublin in 1873. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ================ Potter, T. J., p. 901, ii., was b. June 9, 1828 (not in 1827), ordained 1857, and died Aug. 31, 1873. The hymn:— O! yet, once more, in Britain's isle [For the Conversion of England], in the Arundel Hymns, 1902, is stanzas 30, 31, 34, 35, 36 of a piece inhis Legends, Lyrics and Hymns, 1862. It is entitled "The Definition of the Immaculate Conception: or England and Rome," and marked as “Written several years ago .. to be spoken at the Feast of Languages, which is annually celebrated in the Propaganda College at Rome, on the Festival of the Epiphany, . . . now published for the first time."
