O Jesu, Saviour of the lost

Author: E. H. Bickersteth Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 66 hymnals Topics: Penitence Lyrics: 1 O Jesu, Saviour of the lost, My rock and hiding place, By storms of sin and sorrow tost, I seek Thy sheltering grace. 2 Guilty, forgive me, Lord, I cry; Pursued by foes I come; A sinner, save me, or I die; An outcast, take me home. 3 Once safe in Thine almighty arms, Let storms come on amain; There danger never, never harms; There death itself is gain. 4 And when I stand before Thy throne, And all Thy glories see, Still be my righteousness alone To hide myself in Thee. Amen. Used With Tune: MARTYRDOM

Great God, your love has called us here

Author: Brian Wren (b. 1936) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 34 hymnals Topics: Our Response to Christ In Penitence Lyrics: 1 Great God, your love has called us here, as we, by love, for love were made. Your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonoured, disobeyed. We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find. 2 We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong, half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined yet seeking hope for humankind. 3 Great God, in Christ you call our name and then receive us as your own, not through some merit, right or claim, but by your gracious love alone. We strain to glimpse your mercy seat and find you kneeling at our feet. 4 Then take the towel, and break the bread, and humble us, and call us friends. Suffer and serve till all are fed, and show how grandly love intends to work till all creation sings, to fill all worlds, to crown all things. 5 Great God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share. Give us your Spirit's liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair and offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:17 Used With Tune: MELITA

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart

Author: George Croly (1780-1860) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 349 hymnals Topics: Our Response to Christ In Penitence Lyrics: 1 Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth; through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet-ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel-visitant, no opening skies: but take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Hast thou not bid me love thee, God and King -- all, all thine own, soul, heart, and strength, and mind? I see thy cross -- there teach my heart to cling: oh, let me seek thee, and oh, let me find! 4 Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh: teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh: teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. 5 Teach me to love thee as thine angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame -- the baptism of the heaven-descended Dove, my heart an altar, and thy love the flame. Scripture: 1 Samuel 10:5-11 Used With Tune: SONG 22

Author: Paulus Gerhardt, 1607-1676; Robert Bridges, 1844-1930 Appears in 117 hymnals Topics: Penitence Lyrics: GERMAN - 1 O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, Voll Schmerz und voller Hohn, O Haupt, zum Spott gebunden Mit einer Dornenkron, O Haupt sonst schön gezieret Mit höchster Ehr und Zier, Jetzt aber hoch schimpfieret, Gegrüsset seist du mir! 2 Nun, was du, Herr, erduldet, Ist alles meine Last, Ich, ich hab es verschuldet, Was du getragen hast. Schau her! hier steh ich Armer, Der Zorn verdienet hat. Gib mir, o mein Erbarmer, Den Anblick deiner Gnad! Viens alors, viens toi-mème Me prendre dans tes bras. Au fort de l'agonie, Me serrant sur ton cœur, Ouvre-moi la Patrie Et l'eternel bonheur. --- ENGLISH - 1 O sacred head, sore wounded, Defiled and put to scorn: O kingly head, surrounded With mocking crown of thorn: What sorrow mars Thy grandeur? Can death Thy bloom deflower? O countenance whose splendour The hosts of heav'n adore. 2 Thy beauty, long desirèd, Hath vanished from our sight; Thy power is all expirèd, And quenched the light of light. Ah me! for whom Thou diest, Hide not so far Thy grace: Show me, O Love most highest, The brightness of Thy face. 3 In Thy most bitter passion My heart to share doth cry. With Thee for my salvation Upon the Cross to die. Ah, keep my heart thus movèd To stand Thy cross beneath, To mourn Thee, well-belovèd, Yet thank Thee for Thy death. 4 My days are few, O fail not, With Thine immortal power, To hold me, that I quail not In death's most fearful hour: That I may fight befriended, And see in my last strife To me Thine arms extended Upon the Cross of life. Used With Tune: [O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden] Text Sources: French tr.: Trad. Psautier morave (1757)

O Jesus, We Adore Thee

Author: Arthur T. Russell Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 55 hymnals Topics: Penitence Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, we adore Thee, Upon the cross, our King! We bow our hearts before Thee, Thy gracious name we sing. That name hath brought salvation, That name in life our stay, Our peace, our consolation, When life shall fade away. 2 Yet doth the world disdain Thee, Still passing by the cross; Lord, may our hearts retain Thee; All else we count but loss. Ah, Lord, our sins arraigned Thee, And nailed Thee to the tree: Our pride, our Lord, disdained Thee; Yet deign our Hope to be. 3 O glorious King, we bless Thee, No longer pass Thee by; O Jesus, we confess Thee The Son enthroned on high. Lord, grant to us remission; Life through Thy death restore; Yea, grant us the fruition Of life forevermore. Amen. Scripture: Matthew 27:41-43 Used With Tune: MEIRIONYDD
