Timothy T'ingfang Lew

1891 - 1947 Person Name: Timothy Ting Fang Lew Topics: Creation and Providence; Creation Translator (Chinese) of "All People That on Earth Do Dwell" in Lift Up Your Hearts T'ingfang Lew was a leading Chinese educator, author, and editor. He was educated in China and at Columbia University in New York City (M.A.; Ph.D.). His Bachelor of Divinity degree was from Yale and he studied at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, where he also taught Christian education. Lew lectured throughout America at schools and colleges from 1926 to 1938 and received an S.T.D. degree from Oberlin College. In 1932, Lew began to chair the commission to prepare a Chinese Union hymnal. The resulting Hymns of Universal Praise was published in 1936. Its music editor was Bliss Wiant, a colleague of Lews's at Yenching University in Peking. Lew also edited the Union Book of Common Prayer which was used by four Protestant Chinese groups having approximately one-half million members. He represented China at the World Council of Churches meetings (1927-1939). He served as a member of the Chinese government's legislative body (1936-1941). Lew is remembered for his work with Chinese Christian organizations in China and America where he resided from 1941 to 1947. Henry Lahee

SERF" in Methodist Hymn and Tune Book Born: April 11, 1826, Chelsea, London, England. Died: April 29, 1912, London, England. Lahee studied under John Goss and William Sterndale Bennett. He played the organ at several churches, including Holy Trinity Church, Brompton (1847-74). He won prizes for his compositions in Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, and London, and set to music poems by Edgar Allen Poe ("The Bells"), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ("Building of the Ship") and Alfred Tennyson ("Sleeping Beauty"). James Langran

1835 - 1909 Topics: Creation Composer of "LANGRAN" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) James Langran (b. St. Pancras, London, England, November 10, 1835; d. Tottenham, London, England, June 8, 1909) studied organ as a youth but did not receive his Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford until he was forty-nine years old. He had several organist positions–the longest was at St. Paul's Church, Tottenham, England, from 1870 to 1909. He also taught music at St. Katherine's Training College for Schoolmistresses (1878-1909). Music editor of theNew Mitre Hymnal (1875), Langran composed around fifty hymn tunes and contributed several of them to early editions of Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman
