John Hughes

1873 - 1932 Person Name: John Hughes, 1873-1942 Composer of "CWM RHONDDA" in Hymnal of the Church of God John Hughes (b. Dowlais, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1873; d. Llantwit Fardre, Wales, 1932) received little formal education; at age twelve he was already working as a doorboy at a local mining company in Llantwit Fardre. He eventually became an official in the traffic department of the Great Western Railway. Much of his energy was devoted to the Salem Baptist Church in Pontypridd, where he served as both deacon and precentor. Hughes composed two anthems, a number of Sunday school marches, and a few hymn tunes, of which CWM RHONDDA is universally known, the tune was composed in 1905 Baptist Cymanfa Ganu (song festival) in Capel Rhondda, Pontypridd, Wales. Daniel B. Merrick

1926 - 2004 Person Name: Daniel B. Merrick, Jr. Author of "God of All, Whose Love Surrounds Us" in Hymnal of the Church of God Merrick Daniel B. (Bloomington, Illinois, April 29, 1926--November 11, 2004). Married Dagmar Gustafson in 1952 while a student at Phillips Theological Seminary (A.B., 1948; B.D., 1954); three children. Served churches in Sandoval, Ill.; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Panama Canal Zone; Peoria, Illinois; and Havana, Ill. Won his first hymn writing contest in the mid-1950s. The hymn "O God whose Love Compels Us" was a winning entry for a theme hymn for the American Baptist convention in 1967. Edited the Chalice Hymnal for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). --DNAH Archives
