Ithamar Conkey

1815 - 1867 Composer of "RATHBUN" in Gospel Hymns Nos. 1 to 6 Ithamar D. Conkey USA 1815-1867. Born of Scottish ancestry in Shutesbury, MA, he became a wool merchant. He married Elizabeth Billings, and they had a daughter and two sons. He was organist at Central Baptist Church,Norwich, CN. After that, he went to NewYork City and served as bass soloist at Calvary Episcopal church and Grace Church. Later, he served as bass soloist and choir director of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. His famous hymn was written in 1849. Two years later, William Howard Doane was baptized in the same church. John Perry

E. O. Excell

1851 - 1921 Composer of "[We are waiting by the river]" in Triumphant Songs No.1 Edwin Othello Excel USA 1851-1921. Born at Uniontown, OH, he started working as a bricklayer and plasterer. He loved music and went to Chicago to study it under George Root. He married Eliza Jane “Jennie” Bell in 1871. They had a son, William, in 1874. A member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, he became a prominent publisher, composer, song leader, and singer of music for church, Sunday school, and evangelistic meetings. He founded singing schools at various locations in the country and worked with evangelist, Sam Jones, as his song leader for two decades. He established a music publishing house in Chicago and authored or composed over 2,000 gospel songs. While assisting Gypsy Smith in an evangelistic campaign in Louisville, KY, he became ill, and died in Chicago, IL. He published 15 gospel music books between 1882-1925. Asa Hull

1828 - 1907 Person Name: A. Hull Composer of "[We are waiting by the river]" in Young Men's Christian Association Hymn and Tune Book Asa Hull USA 1828-1907. Born in Keene, NY, he became a music publisher in New York City. He married Emma F Atherton, and they had a daughter, Harriett. He wrote many tunes and authored temperance rallying songs. He published 33 works, of which 21 were songbooks, between 1863-1895. He died in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

William G. Tomer

1833 - 1896 Person Name: W. G. Tomer Composer of "[We are waiting by the river]" in The Evangelists' Songs of Praise No. 2 Born: October 5, 1833, New Jersey. Died: September 26, 1896, New Jersey. Buried: Union Cemetery, Finesville, New Jersey. Tomer studied singing and sang in the choir in Finesville, New Jersey, and began teaching school at age 17. He served in the Union army during the American civil war, then worked as a clerk in Washington, DC, served as music director for Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, and taught school in New Carpentersville and Greenwich, New Jersey.
