Alfred B. Smith

1916 - 2001 Composer of "[Lord, help me live from day to day]" in Favorites Number 4 Used pseudonym B. C. Laurelton ---------- In 1930, he began playing on radio broadcasts in Jersey City, New Jersey, on "The Old Fashioned Gospel Hour." After meeting Wendell P. Loveless, Alfred enrolled at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and became a member of the WMBI staff. During service as Minister of Music at The Church of the Open Door in Philadelphia, he taught at The Philadelphia School of the Bible in the fall of 1938. During that year, he wrote "For God So Loved the World" after visiting the ninety-four year-old hymn writer George C. Stebbins. Smith met Billy Graham when they were both students at Wheaton College. During their long collaboration, they founded Singspiration in 1941. After graduating from Wheaton, Smith, Graham, and George Beverly Shea started "Youth for Christ" in Chicago. --Daniel Mahraun (from livinghymns.org)

Elizabeth McEwen Shields

1879 - 1962 Person Name: Elizabeth M. Shields Composer of "[Lord, help me live from day to day]" in The Cyber Hymnal Shields, Elizabeth McEwen. (Camden, South Carolina, September 22, 1879--May 5, 1962, Asheville, North Carolina). She was named for her grandmother, Elizabeth McEwen of South Carolina. Director, Children's Work of the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education; Chair, children's section of what is now known as the National Council of Churches. Published many books for children, including Junior Hymns and Songs and Worship and Conduct Songs. --Tina Schneider, from information in the DNAH Archives, which includes correspondence from Elizabeth McEwen Shield's sister.

W. E. M. Hackleman

1868 - 1927 Composer of "[Lord, letme live from day to day]" in Worship and Service William Edward Michael Hackleman USA 1868-1927. Born at Orange, IN, he grew up on a farm. At age 17 he was teaching singing classes and leading singing in meetings. He later taught public school for four years and studied music in Toronto, Canada, at the Conservatory of Music, under Italian composer, Francesco d'Auria, and also with other private teachers in New York City. He married Pearl C MNU, and they had four children: Edwin, Florence, Grace, and Gladys. He edited songbooks, composed music and lead music at state and national conventions of the Christian Church. He was an evangelist and served as president of the National Association of Church Musicians, and for five years was secretary to the Indiana Missionary Society. He led singing at the Centennial Convention in 1909 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, PA, for an estimated crowd of 30,000. He also ran the Hackleman Music Company in Indianapolis, IN. He published 15 religious songbooks, some lyrics and many tunes. He died in an auto accident in St. Elmo, IL, enroute to a church convention. John Perry
