W. S. Pitts

1830 - 1918 Person Name: Dr. William S. Pitts Composer of "[There is One who was sent here to save you]" in Spiritual Life Songs William Savage Pitts MD USA 1830-1918. Born at Yates, NY, the son of Puritans, he was the 8th of nine children. He had musical ability from an early age, taking formal music lessons from a graduate of the Boston Handel & Hadyn Society. At age 19, he traveled with his family to Rock County, WI, where he worked as a rural music schoolteacher in Union, WI. He taught for several years, there and at singing schools, and for brass bands, composing much of their music. In 1857 he traveled to Fredericksburg, IA, to visit his fiancee, Ann Eliza Warren, a teacher. Along the way he stopped his horse-drawn wagon at Bradford, IA, to rest. He walked across a field and saw a picturesque wooded valley formed by the Cedar River. Viewing the spot, he envisioned a church building there. He couldn’’t get the image out of his mind. Returning home to WI, he wrote out the words to a poem about the envisioned scene, calling it “Church in the wildwood”, for his own sake. He was then at rest about it. In 1862, he was married in Union, WI, and he and his wife moved to Fredericksburg to be near her elderly parents. Upon returning to Iowa, Pitts stopped along the route at the same location he had five years before to see it again. He was surprised to see a little church being built, and being painted brown. He met with the builders and asked why it was being painted brown, finding out that it was the cheapest paint they could find.. money being tight. The church builders, learning about his poem written several years earlier, asked him to bring his church choir to the dedication and sing a dedicatory song. In 1863 he did so. This was the first time the song was sung in public. The Pitts remained at Fredersicksburg, IA, for 44 years and had five children: Nellie, Grace, Alice, William, and Kate. Pitts served as mayor of Fredericksburg for seven years, as school treasurer for 26 years, wrote a biographical local history, and was a Master Freemason. In 1865 Pitts moved to Chicago to enroll at Rush Medical College. While there, to pay expenses, he offered several songs he had written to a music publisher, who chose his song “Little brown church in the vale”, and he sold the rights to his song for $25. He completed medical school, graduating in 1868, but the song was largely forgotten for several decades. Pitts practiced medicine in Fredericksburg until 1906. His wife died in 1886, and he remarried to Martha Amelia Pierce Grannis in 1887. They moved to Clarion, IA, in 1906. She died in 1909. Pitts then moved to Brooklyn, NY, to be with his son, William, who was working for the U. S. War Department. Pitts joined Fredericksburg’s Baptist Church in 1871, then the Congregational Church in Clarion, IA, in 1906, and later the Dyker Heights Congregational Church in Brooklyn, NY, in 1909. He occasionally performed his most famous song. He died at Brooklyn, NY, but was buried in Fredericksburg, IA. John Perry

Samuel Crossman

1623 - 1684 Person Name: Samuel Crossman, c. 1624-1683 Author of "My Song Is Love Unknown" in With One Voice Crossman, Samuel , B.D. From A. Wood's Athenae Oxonienses (1720, vol. ii. p. 730) we gather all that is known of this hymnwriter. Wood says concerning him:— "Samuel Crossman, Bachelor of Divinity of Cambridge, and Prebendary of Bristol, son of Samuel Crossman, of Bradfield Monachorum, in Suffolk. He hath written and published several things, as The Young Man's Monitor, &c, London, 1664, 8vo., and several sermons, among which are two sermons preached in the Cathedral of Bristol, 30th Jan., 1679, and 30th Jan., 1680, being the days of public humiliation for the execrable murder of King Charles I, printed at London, 1681, &c.; also a sermon preached 23rd April, 1680, in the Cathedral Church of Bristol, before the Gentlemen of the Artillery Company newly raised in that City, printed at London, 1680, &c; and, "An Humble Plea for the quiet rest of God's Ark," preached before Sir Joh. Moore, Lord Mayor of London, at St. Mildred's Church in the Poultrey, 5th February, 1681, London, 1682, 4to, &c. He died 4th February, 1683, aged 69 years, and was buried in the South Aisle of the Cathedral Church in Bristol" [of which he had been appointed Dean a few weeks before]. Crossman's contributions to hymnody were given in a small pamphlet entitled:— The Young Man's Meditation, or some few Sacred Poems upon Select Subjects, and Scriptures. By Samuel Crossman, B.D. London, Printed by J. H., &c, 1664. This pamphlet, which was reprinted by D. Sedgwick, London, 1863, contains 9 sacred poems. Of these the following are in common use:— 1. My life's a shade, my days. Resurrection. This is in 6 stanzas of 4 lines, together with a chorus to each stanza of 4 Lines. It is sometimes given as "Life is a shade, my days," as in Kennedy, 1863. 2. Sweet place, sweet place alone, Pt. i. Jerusalem on high, Pt. ii. These two parts form one poem on Heaven. The most popular portion is Pt. ii. This is given in numerous collections in Great Britain and America. Part i. is not so extensively used. From the two parts the cento "Earth's but a sorry tent," in the Dutch Reformed Hymns of the Church, N. Y. 1869, is also taken. 3. Farewell, poor world, I must be gone. Death anticipated. This is given in the Comprehensive Rippon, 1844, and in a few of the older American hymnbooks. 4. My song is love unknown. John Warrington Hatton

1710 - 1793 Person Name: J. Hatton Composer of "[My God, and is Thy table spread]" in The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 John Warrington Hatton (b. Warrington, England, c. 1710; d, St. Helen's, Lancaster, England, 1793) was christened in Warrington, Lancashire, England. He supposedly lived on Duke Street in Lancashire, from where his famous tune name comes. Very little is known about Hatton, but he was most likely a Presbyterian, and the story goes that he was killed in a stagecoach accident. Bert Polman

J. N. Darby

1800 - 1882 Person Name: John N. Darby Author of "And Is It So?" in The Cyber Hymnal Darby, John Nelson, M.A., youngest son of John Darby of Leap, King's Co., Ireland, was born at Westminster, Nov. 18, 1800; educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1819; and in due course was called to the Bar. He subsequently took Holy Orders; but in a short time allied himself with the Plymouth Brethren. In the exercise of his ministry amongst them he visited most parts of the world, and translated the Bible into English, French, and German. His published works, including a Synopsis of the Books of the Bible; Notes on Revelations, &c, are numerous. He died at Bournemouth, April 29, 1882. His hymns in common use are:— 1. Hark, ten thousand voices crying. The Second Advent anticipated. Praise. Appeared in Hymns for the Poor of the Flock, 1837, and repeated in Psalms and Hymns and Sacred Songs, Lend., Walther, 1842, and A Few Hymns, &c, 1856. It is also given in a few collections other than those for use amongst the “Brethren." 2. O Lord, thy love's unbounded, So sweet, &c. God's unchanging Love. Given in A Few Hymns, &c., 1856, No. 82, in 8 stanzas of 4 lines. Another hymn in the same collection, No. 85, begins with the same first line: "O Lord, Thy love's unbounded! So full, so vast, so free!" This is in 2 stanzas of 8 lines, and is attributed in the "S. MSS." to J. N. Darby, in common with the first. 3. Rest of the saints above. Heaven. In A Few Hymns, &c, 1856, No. 79, in 14 stanzas of 4 lines. 4. Rise, my soul, thy God directs thee. Divine Guidance. 1st published in Hymns for the Poor of the Flock, 1837; and again in Psalms and Hymns, 1842 (as above); and A Few Hymns, &c, 1856, in 10 stanzas of 41. It is also in Dr. Walker's Cheltenham Psalms and Hymns, 1855-1831. 5. This world is a wilderness wide. Following Christ. This is No. 139, in 8 stanzas of 4 lines, in A Few Hymns, &c, 1856. 6. Though faint, yet pursuing, we go on our way. Divine Strength and Defence. This hymn was given anonymously in the Baptist Psalms and Hymns, 1858, No. 558, in 5 stanzas of 8 lines. In the 1871 ed. of the same collection, it appeared as by "John N. Darby (?) 1861." Here we have a doubt and an error. The doubt is with respect to the authorship; and the error is in the date. A hymn published in 1858 cannot be accurately dated "1861." The evidence for the J. N. Darby authorship is most unsatisfactory. We can simply name it "Anon." All these hymns were published anonymously; and the ascriptions of authorship of 1-5 are given from the "S. MSS." The same manuscripts say that he edited the work above referred to: A Few Hymns and some Spiritual Songs, Selected, 1856, for the Little Flock. Lond. William Owen

1813 - 1893 Composer of "[O listen to our wondrous story]" in The Cyber Hymnal Owen, William (‘William Owen of Prysgol,’ 1813-1893), musician; b. 12? Dec. 1813 [in Lônpopty], Bangor, the son of William and Ellen Owen. The father was a quarryman at Cae Braich-y-cafn quarry, Bethesda, and the son began to work in the same quarry when he was ten years old. He learnt music at classes held by Robert Williams (Cae Aseth), at Carneddi, and from William Roberts, Tyn-y-maes, the composer of the hymn-tune ‘Andalusia.’ He wrote his first hymn-tune when he was 18 — it was published in Y Drysorfa for June 1841. After the family had [removed] to [Caesguborwen], Bangor, [sometimes called Cilmelyn] — they had spent some years [at Tŷhen] near the quarry — William Owen formed a temperance choir which sang ‘Cwymp Babilon,’ the work of the conductor, at the Caernarvon temperance festival, 1849. In 1852, with the help of some friends at Bethesda, he published Y Perl Cerddorol yn cynnwys tonau ac anthemau, cysegredig a moesol; of this 3,000 copies were sold, A solfa edition appeared in 1886 of which 4,000 copies were sold. He composed several temperance pieces, some of which were sung in the Eryri temperance festivals held at Caernarvon castle. His anthem, ‘Ffynnon Ddisglair,’ and the hymn-tunes ALMA and DEEMSTER became popular, but it was the hymn-tune called BRYN CALFARIA which made the composer famous; this continues to have a considerable vogue in Wales and in England. He married the daughter of the house called Prysgol and went there to live; he also became precentor at Caeathro C.M. chapel. Lewis Hartsough

1828 - 1919 Author of "I Hear Thy Welcome Voice" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) Hartsough, Lewis, was born at Ithaca, New York, Aug. 31, 1823. Of his hymns the following are in common use:—- 1. I hear Thy welcome voice. The Divine Invitation. 2. In the rifted Rock I'm resting. Safety in Jesus. 3. Lead me to the Rock that's higher. Safety in Jesus. 4. O who'll stand up for Jesus? All for Jesus Nos. 1-3 are in I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, 1878 (1 and 3 with music by Hartsough). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) ================= Hartsough, Lewis, p. 1569, ii. Mr. Hartsough entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1851, and is now (1905) residing in Mount Vernon, Indiana. He was musical editor of J. Hillman's Revivalist, Troy, 1868, and co-editor of The Sacred Harmonist, Boston, 1864, and Beulah Songs, Phila., 1879. In addition to the hymns named on p. 1569, ii., "Let me go where saints are going" [Heav'n desired] (1861) has come into common use. It appeared in W. B. Bradbury's Clarion, 1867, p. 83. Concerning his hymn, "I hear Thy welcome voice," Mr. Sankey says in his My Life and Sacred Songs, 1906, p. 11(3:— The words and music of this beautiful hymn were first published in a monthly, entitled, Guide to Holiness, a copy of which was sent to me in England. I immediately adopted it, and had it published in Sacred Songs and Solos. It proved to be one of the most helpful of the revival hymns, and was often used as an invitation hymn in England and America." [Rev. L. F. Benson, D.D.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907) ================ Hartsough, Lewis. (August 31, 1823--January 1, 1919). Details of his early life are lacking. After being admitted to the Oneida, New York, Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1851 and serving several pastorates in that state, his health failed and he went to Utah where he was influential in establishing the Utah Mission, later becoming its superintendent. Upon relinquishing that position he moved to Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where he spent the remainder of his life. Bird's statement that he lived in Indiana is erroneous. He was minister of the South Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Utica, New York, when he first became associated with Joseph Hillman, who chose him to act as musical editor of The Revivalist, a gospel hymn book which went through eleven editions in five years, 1868-1872. This book had a remarkable sale and was doubtless used in more churches during the 1870s than any other of similar character. To it the Reverend Hartsough contributed, in one edition, twelve texts, fourteen tunes, and thirty arrangements of tunes, several of the latter being of the religio-folk variety which had been so popular in the early camp meetings. It is a valuable source work. "I love to think of the heavenly land" (p.1573) is by Hartsough. "I hear thy welcome voice (p.1569), originally in six four-line stanzas, with Refrain, in full S/1931; with the first three stanzas, slightly emended, Brethren/1951; with stanzas 1, 2, 3, and 5, also emended, in Hymns of the Living Faith, 1951. Wendell P. Loveless

1892 - 1987 Person Name: W. P. L. Author of "Wedding Song" in New Radio Songs and Choruses of the Gospel No. 4 Rv Wendell Phillips Loveless USA 1892-1987, Born in Wheaton, IL, he first engaged in business in Chicago. In 1914 he became a member of an entertainment group that toured the U.S. on the Chatauqua circuit. Spending six years with the group he learned voice, piano, dramatics, and MC duties, later managing the group. He later used these talents in Christian ministry. In 1917 he married Velma Stone, and they had three children: Robert, David, and Wendell Jr. He was a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps during WWI. He was converted through reading the Bible at home. He joined the Moody Bible Institute (MBI) in 1926, first as business manager of the extension department. He later became director of the Moody Bible Institute radio station WMBI in Chicago from 1926-1947. He then became an itinerant Bible teacher. He later pastored the Wheaton Evangelical Free Church, Community Church in Boca Raton, FL, and First Chinese Church of Christ in Honolulu, HI, continuing his radio ministry in the last two locations (also managing station KAIM Honolulu). In 1960 he assigned all his copyrights to Hope Publishing Company. He wrote popular songs and choruses, many found in hymnals published by Hope, and some translated into other languages. He authored several books: “Glimpses of Christ n Psalm IX” (1937); “Sunrise meditations” (1940); “New radio songs & choruses of the gospel #3” (1940); New radio songs & choruses of the gospel #4” (1942); “Little talks on great words” (1942?); “Christ and the believer in the Song of Songs” (1945); “Plain talks on practical truths” (1945); “New sunrise meditations” (1945); “Manual of gospel broadcasting” (1946); “Plain talks on Romans” (1946); “New radio songs & choruses of the gospel #5” (1946). Adger M. Pace

1882 - 1959 Person Name: Ad­ger M. Pace Composer of "[Jesus the Lord laid His glory aside]" in The Cyber Hymnal Born: August 13, 1882, Pelzer, South Carolina. Died: February 12, 1959, Lawrence County Hospital, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Buried: Dunn Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Pseudonyms: Millard A. Glenn; Charles H. Huff; Audalene Mayfield; Fay Wallington. Born August 13, 1882 near Pelzer, South Carolina, Adger M. Pace soon gained a love and appreciation for music that characterized the remainder of his life. He sang bass for seventeen years as a member of the Vaughan Radio Quartet, singing over WOAN--one of the South's first radio stations. He was also active in singing conventions, serving as one of the organizers and the first president of the National Singing Convention in 1937. Pace's most significant contribution was as a teacher of gospel music. He taught harmony, counterpoint and composition in the Vaughan School of Music in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, educating the first generation of Southern gospel Music leaders. Beginning in 1920, he served for 37 years as Music Editor for all Vaughan publications. He was also a notable songwriter--composing more than a thousand songs in his career.
