Sing we of the blessed Mother

Author: George Boorne Timms, 1910-1997 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 17 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Sing we of the blessèd Mother who received the angel's word, and obedient to his summons bore in love the infant Lord; sing we of the joys of Mary at whose breast that child was fed who is Son of God eternal and the everlasting Bread. 2 Sing we, too, of Mary's sorrows, of the sword that pierced her through, when beneath the cross of Jesus she his weight of suffering knew, looked upon her Son and Saviour reigning high on Calvary's tree, saw the price of man's redemption paid to set the sinner free. 3 Sing again the joys of Mary when she saw the risen Lord, and in prayer with Christ's apostles, waited on his promised word: from on high the blazing glory of the Spirit's presence came, heavenly breath of God's own being, manifest through wind and flame. 4 Sing the chiefest joy of Mary when on earth her work was done, and the Lord of all creation brought her to his heavenly home: Virgin Mother, Mary blessèd, raised on high and crowned with grace, may your Son, the world's redeemer, grant us all to see his face. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning

Author: Reginald Heber, 1783-1826 Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 911 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2 Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining; low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. 3 Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, odours of Edom, and offerings divine, gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? 4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure: richer by far is the heart's adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. (The first verse may be repeated at the end.) Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Epiphany Used With Tune: EPIPHANY

Earth has many a noble city

Author: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, 348-413; Edward Caswall, 1814-1878 Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 61 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Earth has many a noble city; Bethl'hem, thou dost all excel: out of thee the Lord from heaven came to rule his Israel. 2 Fairer than the sun at morning was the star that told his birth, to the world its God announcing seen in fleshly form on earth. 3 Eastern sages at his cradle make oblations rich and rare; see them give in deep devotion, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 4 Sacred gifts of mystic meaning: incense doth their God disclose, gold the King of kings proclaimeth, myrrh his sepulcher foreshows. 5 Jesu, whom the Gentiles worshipped at thy glad Epiphany, unto thee with God the Father and the Spirit glory be. The people that in darkness sat

Author: John Morrison, 1749-1798 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 217 hymnals Lyrics: 1 The people that in darkness sat a glorious light have seen; the light has shined on them who long in shades of death have been. 2 To hail thee, Sun of righteousness, the gathering nations come; they joy as when the reapers bear their harvest treasures home. 3 For thou their burden dost remove, and break the tyrant's rod, as in the day when Midian fell before the sword of God. 4 For unto us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and on his shoulder ever rests all power in earth and heaven. 5 His name shall be the Prince of Peace, the everlasting Lord, the Wonderful, the Counsellor, the God by all adored. 6 His righteous government and power shall over all extend; on judgement and on justice based, his reign shall have no end. 7 Lord Jesus, reign in us, we pray, and make us thine alone, who with the Father ever art and Holy Spirit One. What star is this, with beams so bright

Author: Charles Coffin, 1676-1749; John Chandler, 1806-1876 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 91 hymnals Lyrics: 1 What star is this, with beams so bright, more beauteous than the noonday light? It shines to herald forth the King, and Gentiles to his crib to bring. 2 True spake the prophet from afar who told the rise of Jacob's star; and eastern sages with amaze upon the wondrous token gaze. 3 The guiding star above is bright; within them shines a clearer light, and leads them on with power benign to seek the Giver of the sign. 4 O Jesus, while the star of grace impels us on to seek thy face, let not our slothful hearts refuse the guidance of thy light to use. 5 To God the Father, heavenly light, to Christ, revealed in earthly night, to God the Holy Ghost we raise our equal and unceasing praise! Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Epiphany Scripture: Matthew 2:2 Used With Tune: PUER NOBIS Text Sources: Breviary, Paris, 1736; Other translators: Editors of Hymns Ancient and Modern, alt.

Christian, dost thou see them

Author: John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Appears in 305 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Christian, dost thou see them on the holy ground, how the troops of Midian prowl and prowl around? Christian, up and smite them, counting gain but loss: smite them by the merit of the holy cross. 2 Christian, dost thou feel them, how they work within, striving, tempting, luring, goading into sin? Christian, never tremble; never be down-cast; smite them by the virtue of the Lenten fast. 3 Christian, dost thou hear them, how they speak thee fair? 'Always fast and vigil? Always watch and prayer?' Christian, answer boldly, 'While I breath, I pray:' peace shall follow battle, night shall end in day. 4 'Well I know thy trouble, O my servant true; thou art very weary, I was weary too; but that toil shall make thee some day all mine own, and the end of sorrow shall be near my throne.' Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Lent Scripture: 1 Peter 5:8-9 Used With Tune: ST ANDREW OF CRETE

Forty days and forty nights

Author: Francis Pott, 1832-1909; George Hunt Smyttan, 1822-1870 Meter: 7.7.7.7 Appears in 157 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Forty days and forty nights thou wast fasting in the wild; forty days and forty nights tempted, and yet undefiled. 2 Sunbeams scorching all the day; chilly dew-drops nightly shed; prowling beasts about thy way; stones thy pillow; earth thy bed. 3 Shall not we thy sorrows share, and from earthly joys abstain, fasting with unceasing prayer, glad with thee to suffer pain? 4 And if Satan, vexing sore, flesh or spirit should assail, thou, his Vanquisher before, grant we may not faint nor fail. 5 So shall we have peace divine; holier gladness ours shall be: round us too shall angels shine, such as ministered to thee. 6 Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, ever constant by thy side; that with thee we may appear at th'eternal Eastertide. Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Lent Scripture: Matthew 4:1-2 Used With Tune: HEINLEIN (AUS DER TIEE RUFE ICH)
