My God, my king, thy various praise

Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 256 hymnals Lyrics: 1 My God, my king, thy various praise shall fill the remnant of my days; thy grace employ my humble tongue, till death and glory raise the song. 2 The wings of every hour shall bear some thankful tribute to thine ear, and every setting sun shall see new works of duty done for thee. 3 Thy truth and justice I'll proclaim; thy bounty flows, an endless stream; thy mercy swift; thine anger slow, but dreadful to the stubborn foe. 4 Let distant times and nations raise the long succession of thy praise; and unborn ages make my song the joy and labour of their tongue. 5 But who can speak thy wondrous deeds? Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds; vast and unsearchable thy ways, vast and immortal be thy praise. Topics: Praise and Thanksgiving Scripture: Psalm 145 Used With Tune: ST BARTHOLOMEW

I danced in the morning when the world was begun

Author: Sydney Carter (b. 1915) Appears in 52 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth. Refrain: Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the dance, said he, and I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I'll lead you all in the dance, said he. 2 I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn't follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John-- they came with me and the dance went on. [Refrain] 3 I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, and they left me there on a cross to die. [Refrain] 4 I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black-- it's hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I'd gone, but I am the dance, and I still go on. [Refrain] 5 They cut me down and I leapt up high; I am the life that'll never, never die; I'll live in you if you'll live in me; I am the Lord of the dance, said he. [Refrain] Topics: Christmas; Easter; God--in Jesus Christ His Life, Death, and Glory Used With Tune: SHAKER TUNE

Deep in the shadows of the past

Author: Brian Wren (b. 1936) Appears in 9 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads travelled with their God across the desert sands. The dawn of hope for all mankind was glimpsed by them alone-- a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods they met a mystery: God with an uncompleted name, 'I am what I will be'; and by their tents, around their fires, in story, song and law they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Abraham to Nazareth the promise changed and grew while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, and some, in letters or laments, in prophecy and praise, recovered, held and re-expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders, long ago, who sifted, chose, and then preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its promise yet our comfort, strength and call-- the working model for our faith alive with hope for all. Topics: Bible Scripture: Exodus 3:13 Used With Tune: DURROW

Our Lord, his passion ended

Author: F. C. Burkitt (1864-1935) Appears in 11 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Our Lord, his passion ended, hath gloriously ascended, yet though from him divided, he leaves us not unguided; all his benefits to crown he hath sent his Spirit down, burning like a flame of fire his disciples to inspire. 2 God's Spirit is directing; no more they sit expecting; but forth to all the nation they go with exultation; that which God in them hath wrought fills their life and soul and thought, so their witness now can do work as great in others too. 3 The centuries go gliding but still we have abiding with us that Spirit Holy to make us brave and lowly-- lowly, for we feel our need, God alone is strong indeed; brave, for with the Spirit's aid we can venture unafraid. 4 O Lord of every nation, fill us with inspiration! We know our own unfitness, yet for thee would bear witness. By thy Spirit now we raise to the heavenly Father praise: Holy Spirit, Father, Son, make us know thee, ever One. Topics: Ascension; God--Holy Spirit Used With Tune: NAPHILL
