God Moves in a Mysterious Way

Author: William Cowper Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,132 hymnals Scripture: John 13:7 Lyrics: 1 God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform; he plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. 2 Deep in unfathomable mines of never failing skill, he treasures up his bright designs and works his sovereign will. 3 You fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds you so much dread are big with mercy and shall break in blessings on your head. 4 His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour; the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower. 5 Blind unbelief is sure to err and scan his work in vain: God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain. Fred Pratt Green

1903 - 2000 Scripture: John 13:3-5 Author of "An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare" in The Presbyterian Hymnal The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies. Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more." --Seven New Hymns of Hope , 1971.
