Hubert P. Main

1839 - 1925 Person Name: Hubert Platt Main Composer of "[I stood outside the gate]" in The Cyber Hymnal Hubert Platt Main DD USA 1839-1925. Born at Ridgefield, CT, he attended singing school as a teenager. In 1854 he went to New York City and worked as an errand boy in a wallpaper house. The next year he became an errand boy in the Bristow & Morse Piano Company. He was an organist, choir leader, and compiled books of music. He also helped his father edit the “Lute Songbook” by Isaac Woodbury. In 1866 he married Olphelia Louise Degraff, and they had two sons: Lucius, and Hubert. In 1867 he filled a position at William B Bradbury’s publishing house. After Bradbury’s death in 1868 the Bigelow & Main Publishers were formed as its successor. He also worked with his father until his father’s death in 1873. Contributors to their efforts were Fanny Crosby, Ira Sankey, Wilbur Crafts, and others. In addition to publishing, Main wrote 1000+ pieces of music, including part song, singing school songs, Sunday school music, hymns, anthems, etc. He also arranged music and collected music books. He 1891 he sold his collection of over 3500 volumes to the Newberry Library in Chicago, IL, where they were known as the Main Library. Some of his major publications include: “Book of Praise for the Sunday school” (1875), “Little pilgrim songs” (1884), “Hymns of Praise” (`1884), “Gems of song for the Sunday school” (1901), “Quartettes for men’s voices: Sacred & social selections” (1913). In 1922 Hope Publishing Company acquired Bigelow & Main. He was an editor, author, compiler, and composer, as well as publisher. He died in Newark, NJ. John Perry

Philip Phillips

1834 - 1895 Person Name: Phillip Phillips Composer of "OUTSIDE THE GATE" in The Tribute of Praise Phillips, Philip, commonly known as the "Singing Pilgrim," was born in Chautauqua County, N. York, Aug. 13, 1834. Although engaged in farming for a time, from an early age he devoted himself to music, and ultimately devoted himself to the work of a "Singing Evangelist," in which capacity he has visited most English-speaking countries. His popular hymnals are: (1) Early Blossoms, 1860; (2) Musical Leaves, 1862; and (3) The Singing Pilgrim, 1866. In these works he published one or two hymns, including "I have heard of a Saviour's love" (The love of Christ), as in I. D. Josephine Pollard

1834 - 1892 Author of "I Stood Outside the Gate" in Christ in Song Josephine Pollard USA 1834-1892. Born at NYC, NY, one of seven children and daughter of an architect, she attended an exclusive girls school, Spingler Institute, and was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a founding member of the professional women’s club, Sorosis. She never married. She became an author, poet, and hymnist, writing many children’s books and for children’s magazines, including Harper’s, Scribner’s, and the New York Ledger. She wrote 44 books, mostly religious, for children, but also about history, birds, sports and games, and adventure stories. She also wrote 100+ hymn lyrics as well. She worked as an editor for the Sunday School Times and for the Methodist Book Concern, where she edited a magazine for African Americans. Her children’s books include: “History of the U.S.” (1884); “The life of George Washington” ; “The life of Christ for young people”; “History of the New Testament in words of one syllable” (1899); “History of the Old Testament in words of one syllable” (1899); “Bible stories for children” (1899). She was in poor health in her latter years. She died at NYC, NY. A. Brooks Everett

1828 - 1875 Person Name: A. B. Everett Composer of "[I stood outside the gate]" in Songs of Gladness for the Sabbath School Asa Brooks Everett MusDoc USA 1828-1875. Born in VA, he planned to be a doctor, but decided to study music instead. He studied in Boston for four years and also in Leipzig, Germany for four years.. He composed many gospel tunes and edited “The Sceptre” a New York publication. His brothers, Benjamin and Leonard, were also composers. He and Leonard organized a musical instruction system in Richmond, VA, in the 1850s. By 1861, 50 teachers and singing schools were representing them and using their publications. He died in Nashville, TN. John Perry
