1654 - 1681 Composer (attributed to) of "AUS DER TIEFE" in Moravian Book of Worship Born: January 15, 1654, Rotenbach, Germany. Died: 1681, Eisleben, Germany, of plague. Martin Herbst (1654-1681) was a German Lutheran clergyman. Herbst studied at St. Lorenz School in Nürnberg, and read theology and philosophy at Altdorf and Jena. 1875 - 1957 Person Name: Helen Dickinson Translator of "Lord, We Cry to You for Help" in Moravian Book of Worship Dickinson was the first woman to receive a PhD from Heidelberg University in Germany at a time when women were not generally welcomed in graduate philosophy classes. She was a well known lyricist, translator, and art historian who frequently lectured at Union Seminary in New York City. She and her husband Clarence (organist at New York City’s Brick Presbyterian Church for half a century), wrote hundreds of chorales and anthems for church choirs.
