Adam Geibel
1855 - 1933 Composer of "[Valley lilies, meek and lowly]" in Christ in Song Born: September 15, 1855, Neuenheim, Germany.
Died: August 3, 1933, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Though blinded by an eye infection at age eight, Geibel was a successful composer, conductor, and organist. Emigrating from Germany probably around 1864, he studied at the Philadelphia Institute for the Blind, and wrote a number of Gospel songs, anthems, cantatas, etc. He founded the Adam Geibel Music Company, later evolved into the Hall-Mack Company, and later merged to become the Rodeheaver Hall-Mack Company. He was well known for secular songs like "Kentucky Babe" and "Sleep, Sleep, Sleep." In 1885, Geibel organized the J. B. Stetson Mission. He conducted the Stetson Chorus of Philadelphia, and from 1884-1901, was a music instructor at the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind. His works include:

Ithamar Conkey
1815 - 1867 Composer of "RATHBUN" in The Cyber Hymnal Ithamar D. Conkey USA 1815-1867. Born of Scottish ancestry in Shutesbury, MA, he became a wool merchant. He married Elizabeth Billings, and they had a daughter and two sons. He was organist at Central Baptist Church,Norwich, CN. After that, he went to NewYork City and served as bass soloist at Calvary Episcopal church and Grace Church. Later, he served as bass soloist and choir director of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. His famous hymn was written in 1849. Two years later, William Howard Doane was baptized in the same church.

Flora Kirkland
Author of "Valley Lilies" in The Cyber Hymnal Flora Kirkland was born in 1862 in Kentucky, before moving to Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from school she became a public school teacher for the seventh grade. She was a member of Tompkins Avenue Congregational Church for which she wrote a number of hymns. She was very active in the Wallabout Bay Mission in that neighborhood of Brooklyn. Most of Wallabout Bay would be filled in to make way for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She died 17 January 1911.
