Give us the wings of faith to rise

Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 521 hymnals Topics: Other Saints and Festivals Thomas the Apostle; Other Saints and Festivals James the Apostle Lyrics: 1 Give us the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. 2 Once they were mourning here below, their couch was wet with tears; they wrestled hard, as we do now, with sins and doubts and fears. 3 We ask them whence their victory came: they, with united breath, ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death. 4 They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast, and, following their incarnate God, possess the promised rest. 5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise for his own pattern given; while the long cloud of witnesses show the same path to heaven. Scripture: Hebrews 11:32-40 Used With Tune: SAN ROCCO

Let the round world with songs rejoice

Author: Richard Mant, 1776-1848 Appears in 11 hymnals Topics: Apostles and Evangelists Lyrics: 1 Let the round world with songs rejoice, Let heaven return the joyful voice, All mindful of the Apostles’ fame, Let heaven and earth their praise proclaim. 2 Ye servants who once bore the light Of gospel truth o’er heathen night, Still may your work that light impart, To glad our eyes and cheer our heart. 3 O God, by whom to them was given The key that shuts and opens heaven, Our chains unbind, our loss repair, And grant us grace to enter there. 4 For at thy will they preached the word Which cured disease, which health conferred; O may thy healing power once more Our souls to grace and health restore. 5 That when as judge thy Son shall come To bring his ransomed people home, He may with them pronounce us blest, And place us in thine endless rest. 6 To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Be honour, praise and majesty, Now and throughout eternity. Amen. Used With Tune: DEUS TUORUM MILITUM Text Sources: Latin, c. 10th century

Glorious things of you are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,310 hymnals Topics: Saints Days and Holy Days Apostles Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of you are spoken, Zion, city of our God: he whose word cannot be broken formed you for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake your sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded you may smile at all your foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply your sons and daughters and all fear of want remove: who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage - grace, which like the Lord the giver never fails from age to age? 3 Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in their Redeemer's blood: Jesus, whom their souls rely on, makes them kings and priests to God. For his love his people raises over self to reign as kings, and as priests, his solemn praises each for a thank-offering brings. 4 Saviour, since of Zion's city I, through grace, a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in your name: fading are the worldlings' pleasures, all their boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion's children know. Scripture: 1 Peter 2:1-8 Used With Tune: ABOT'S LEIGH

Appears in 237 hymnals Topics: Apostles and Saints Lyrics: 1 Hark! the sound of holy voices, Chanting o'er the crystal sea, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord, to Thee; Multitude, which none can number, Like the stars in glory stands, Clothes in white apparel, holding Palms of victory in their hands. 2 Patriarch, and Holy Prophet, Who prepared the way of Christ, King, Apostle, Saint, Confessor, Martyr and Evangelist, Saintly Maiden, Godly Matron, Widows who have watched to prayer, Joined in holy concert, singing To the Lord of all, are there. 3 They have come from tribulation, And have wash'd their robes in blood, Wash'd them in the blood of Jesus; Tried they were, and firm they stood; Mock'd, imprison'd, stoned, tormented, Sawn assunder, slain with sword, They have conquer'd death and Satan By the might of Christ the Lord. 4 Marching with Thy Cross their banner, They have triumph'd, following Thee, the Captain of salvation, Thee, their Saviour and their King; Gladly, Lord, with Thee they suffer'd: Gladly, Lord, with Thee they died; And by death to life immortal They were born and glorified. 5 Now they reign in heavenly glory, Now they walk in golden light, Now they drink, as from a river, Holy bliss and infinite: Love and peace they taste for ever, And all truth and knowledge see In the beatific vision Of the Blessed Trinity. Amen. Used With Tune: MOULTRIE
