On Jordan's Bank, the Baptist's Cry

Author: Charles Coffin (1676-1749); John Chandler (1806-1876) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 236 hymnals Topics: Baptism of Jesus First Line: On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry Lyrics: 1 On Jordan's bank, the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. 2 Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within. Prepare we in our hearts a home, where such a mighty guest may come. 3 For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away, like flowers that wither and decay. 4 To heal the sick stretch out thine hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth, and let thy light restore earth's own true loveliness once more. 5 All praise, eternal Son, to thee whose advent doth thy people free; whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. Scripture: Isaiah 40:1-11 Used With Tune: WINCHESTER NEW

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1,239 hymnals Topics: Christian Year Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest; lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light; look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I’ll walk till traveling days are done. Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

When Jesus Came to Jordan (Cuando al Jordán Fue Cristo)

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000; Alberto Merubia, b. 1919 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: Baptism of the Lord; Bautismo del Señor; Arrepentimiento; Repentance; Cross; Cruz, Santa; Encarnación; Incarnation; Jesucristo; Jesus Christ; Rédemption; Redención; Temptation; Tentación Lyrics: ENGLISH - 1 When Jesus came to Jordan To be baptized by John, He did not come for pardon, But as the Sinless One. He came to share repentance With all who mourn their sins, To speak the vital sentence With which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, Our utmost woe and loss, For us and our salvation To die upon the cross. So when the Dove descended On him, the Son of Man, The hidden years had ended, The age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us To keep the vows we make; This very day invade us, And ev'ry bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, The gift we covet most: To share the resurrection That leads to Pentecost. Scripture: Matthew 3:13-17 Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE

When Jesus Was Baptized by John

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Baptism Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 When Jesus was baptized by John, the sky was torn apart. The Spirit, like a dove, came down and fell upon his heart. As he rose from that desert spring, a voice from heaven cried: “You are my Son, beloved one, my chosen one, my pride.” 2 Thus Jesus heard his call from God and, gifted with God’s grace, began to spread the light of love in every darkened place. He healed the sick, the blind, and lame; the broken, contrite heart. He called for justice for the poor and all those set apart. 3 Like Jesus, we have been baptized, accepted as God’s own, and in that holy sacrament our mission was made known. The Risen Christ lives on in us, his body here on earth, and we are instruments of grace to give God’s love new birth. 4 Each time we gather at the font, remember who we are: a people charged to love and serve our neighbors near and far; a people called to be a friend to all who are in need, and show that love is just and fair in every word and deed. Scripture: Isaiah 42:1 Used With Tune: JORDAN SPRING

O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High

Author: Thomas à Kempis; Benjamin Webb Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 143 hymnals Topics: Christian Year Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 O love, how deep, how broad, how high, beyond all thought and fantasy, that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals' sake. 2 For us baptized, for us he bore his holy fast and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew, for us, the tempter overthrew. 3 For us by wickedness betrayed, for us, in crown of thorns arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us gave up his dying breath. 4 For us he rose from death again; for us he went on high to reign; for us he sent the Spirit here to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer. 5 All glory to our Lord and God, for love so deep, so high, so broad: the Trinity whom we adore forever and forevermore. Scripture: Matthew 3:13 Used With Tune: DEO GRACIAS

O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

Author: Louis FitzGerald Benson Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 66 hymnals Topics: Christian Year Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 O sing a song of Bethlehem, of shepherds watching there, and of the news that came to them from angels in the air. The light that shone on Bethlehem fills all the world today. Of Jesus' birth and peace on earth the angels sing alway. 2 O sing a song of Nazareth, of sunny days of joy; O sing of fragrant flowers' breath, and of the sinless boy. For now the flowers of Nazareth in every heart may grow. Now spreads the fame of his dear name on all the winds that blow. 3 O sing a song of Galilee, of lake and woods and hill, of him who walked upon the sea and bade its waves be still. For though, like waves on Galilee, dark seas of trouble roll, when faith has heard the Master's word, falls peace upon the soul. 4 O sing a song of Calvary, its glory and dismay, of him who hung upon the tree, and took our sins away. For he who died on Calvary is risen from the grave, and Christ, our Lord, by heaven adored, is mighty now to save. Scripture: Matthew 8:26 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD
