Sing Praise to God, Whose Mighty Acts (Psalm 9)

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr. Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: Sing praise to God, whose mighty acts Lyrics: 1 Sing praise to God, whose mighty acts still strong in memory stand to give us hope when evil seems to gain the upper hand. Give thanks for deeds of steadfast love, for wonders new and old: for fire and cloud, for daily food, for mercies yet untold. 2 Though monuments of evil rise in marble, gilt, and stone, time’s search will find their boasts untrue, their makers’ names unknown. Mute avenues of ruins will mark where once proud cities stood, but from destruction God will save the faithful, just, and good. 3 Rise up, O God, reclaim the power usurped by mortal pride; deflate the hollow pomp of those whom rank and titles hide. Let not the needy cry unheard, the suffering hope in vain; restore the fallen, bless the meek, till peace and justice reign. Topics: Christ's Return and Judgment; Hope; Jesus Christ Advent; Justice; Sovereignty of God; Thanksgiving Scripture: Psalm 9 Used With Tune: SALVATION

A Fierce Unrest

Author: Don Marquis, 1878-1937 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: A fierce unrest seethes at the core Lyrics: 1 A fierce unrest seethes at the core of all existing things: it was the eager wish to soar that gave the gods their wings. There throbs through all the worlds that are this heartbeat hot and strong, and shaken systems, star by star, awake and glow in song. 2 But for the urge of this unrest these joyous spheres are mute; but for the rebel in our breast had we remained as brutes. When baffled lips demanded speech, speech trembled into birth; one day the lyric word shall reach from earth to laughing earth. 3 From deed to dream, from dream to deed, from daring hope to hope, the restless wish, the instant need, still drove us up the slope. Sing we no governed firmament, cold, ordered, regular; we sing the stinging discontent that leaps from star to star. Topics: Humanist Teachings Humanity: Women and Men; Evolution; Faith Used With Tune: SALVATION

God Moves in a Mysterious Way

Author: W. Cowper, 1731-1800 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1,127 hymnals Lyrics: 1 God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants His footsteps in the sea And rides upon the storm. Deep in unknown, unfathomed mines Of never-failing skill He treasures up His bright designs And works His sov'reign will. 2 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy and shall break In blessings on your head. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust Him for His grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face. 3 His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding every hour; The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flow'r. Blind unbelief is sure to err And scan His work in vain; God is His own interpreter, And He will make it plain. Topics: Trinity 7 Used With Tune: SALVATION
