By Grace I'm Saved

Author: Christian Ludwig Scheidt, 1709-61 Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 24 hymnals Scripture: Ephesians 2:4-9 First Line: By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless Lyrics: 1 By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No! Then this word must true remain; By grace you too will life obtain. 2 By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; Our works and conduct have no worth. God in His love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; His death did for our sins atone, And we are saved by grace alone. 3 By grace God's Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit That Jesus died your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, That brought Him from His heav'nly throne. 4 By grace! This ground of faith is certain; So long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, What in His Word our God commands, Our faith in what our God has done Depends on grace--grace through His Son. 5 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation's furnace tried, By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, The Father's heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? 6 By grace! On this I'll rest when dying; In Jesus' promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart's condition, I also know my Savior's voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown Since I am saved by grace alone. Used With Tune: O DASS ICH TAUSEND ZUNGEN HÄTTE (DRETZEL) Text Sources: The Lutheran Hymnal, 1941 (Tr.), alt.

Blessèd city, heavenly Salem

Author: J. M. Neale, 1818-1866 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 74 hymnals Scripture: Ephesians 2:20-22 Lyrics: PART ONE - 1 Blessèd city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who of living stones art builded in the height of heaven above, and with angel hosts encircled, as a bride dost earthward move. 2 From celestial realms descending, bridal glory round thee shed, meet for him whose love espoused thee, to thy Lord shalt thou be led; all thy streets and all thy bulwarks of pure gold are fashionèd. 3 Bright thy gates of pearl are shining, they are open evermore; and by virtue of his merits thither faithful souls do soar, who for Christ's dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore. 4 Many a blow and biting sculpture polished well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly Architect, who therewith hath willed for ever that his palace should be decked. PART TWO - 5 Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the Head and corner-stone, chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one, Holy Sion's help for ever, and her confidence alone. 6 All that dedicated city, dearly loved of God on high, in exultant jubilation pours perpetual melody, God the One in Three adoring in glad hymns eternally. PART THREE - 7 To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, to-day; with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. 8 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee for ever with the blessed to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. Doxology: [To be sung at the end of any part, or of the whole hymn] Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three, and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. Topics: Dedication Used With Tune: WESTMINSTER ABBEY Text Sources: Latin, before 9th century
