The Church's One Foundation

Author: Samuel J. Stone Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 869 hymnals Scripture: Ephesians 5:26-27 Lyrics: 1 The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth; her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder the world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: “How long?” and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth has union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally. There is a green hill far away

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 700 hymnals Scripture: Ephesians 5:2 Lyrics: 1 There is a green hill far away, outside a city wall, where the dear Lord was crucified who died to save us all. 2 We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear, but we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there. 3 He died that we might be forgiven, he died to make us good, that we might go at last to heaven, saved by his precious blood. 4 There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin, he only could unlock the gate of heaven, and let us in. 5 Oh, dearly, dearly has he loved, and we must love him too, and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do. Trust and Obey

Author: John H. Sammis, 1846-1919 Meter: 6.6.9 D with refrain Appears in 452 hymnals Scripture: Ephesians 5:8 First Line: When we walk with the Lord Refrain First Line: Trust and obey, for there's no other way Lyrics: 1 When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Refrain: Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. 2 Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil he will richly repay; not a grief nor a loss, not a frown nor a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey. [Refrain] 3 But we never can prove the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay; for the favor he shows and the joy he bestows are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain] 4 Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we'll walk by his side in the way; what he says we will do, where he sends we will go-- never fear, only trust and obey. [Refrain] Topics: Fellowship Used With Tune: TRUST AND OBEY
