A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther; Frederick Henry Hedge Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Appears in 674 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 40:28 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he. Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him. His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth. The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever. Paraphrase 22, verses 3-8

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: Art thou afraid his power shall fail Scripture: Isaiah 40:28-31 Lyrics: 1 Art thou afraid his power shall fail when comes thy evil day? And can an all-creating arm grow weary or decay? 2 Supreme in wisdom as in power the Rock of ages stands; though him thou canst not see, nor trace the working of his hands. 3 He gives the conquest to the weak, supports the fainting hearts; and courage in the evil hour his heavenly aid imparts. 4 Mere human power shall fast decay, and youthful vigour cease; but they who wait upon the Lord in strength shall still increase. 5 They with unwearied feet shall tread the path of life divine; with growing ardour onward move, with growing brightness shine. 6 On eagles' wings they mount, they soar, their wings are faith and love, till, past the cloudy regions here, they rise to heaven above. Topics: Our Response to God in adoration and gratitude; Encouragement Used With Tune: ST. STEPHEN (ABRIDGE) Text Sources: Scottish Paraphrases, 1781

Hymn 48

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 403 hymnals First Line: Awake, our souls; away, our fears Scripture: Isaiah 40:28-31 Lyrics: Awake, our souls; away, our fears, Let every trembling thought begone; Awake, and run the heav'nly race, And put a cheerful courage on. True, 'tis a strait and thorny road, And mortal spirits tire and faint; But they forget the mighty God, That feeds the strength of every saint. Thee, mighty God! whose matchless power Is ever new and ever young, And firm endures, while endless years Their everlasting circles run. From thee, the overflowing spring, Our souls shall drink a fresh supply, While such as trust their native strength Shall melt away, and droop, and die. Swift as an eagle cuts the air, We'll mount aloft to thine abode On wings of love our souls shall fly, Nor tire amidst the heav'nly road.
