To a Friend, on the Death of a Child

Appears in 165 hymnals First Line: Life is a span, a fleeting hour Lyrics: I. Life is a span, a fleeting hour, How soon the vapour flies! Man is a tender transient flow'r, That ev'n in blooming dies! II. Death spreads like winter's frozen arms, And beauty smiles no more: Ah! where are now those rising charms Which pleas'd our eyes before? III. The once lov'd form now cold and dead, Each mournful thought employs; And nature weeps her comforts fled, And wither'd all her joys. IV. But wait the interposing gloom, And lo, stern winter flies! And drest in beauty's fairest bloom, The flow'ry tribes arise. V. Hope looks beyond the bounds of time; When what we now deplore, Shall rise in full immortal prime, And bloom to fade no more. VI. Then cease fond nature, cease thy tears, Religion points on high: There everlasting spring appears, And joys that cannot die.

To a Maid Engaged to Joseph

Author: Gracia Grindal Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 12 hymnals Lyrics: 1 To a maid engaged to Joseph, The angel Gabriel came. “Fear not,” the angel told her, “I come to bring good news, Good news I come to tell you, Good news, I say, good news. 2 “For you are highly favored By God, the Lord of all, Who even now is with you. You are on earth most blest, You are most blest, most blessèd, God chose you, you are blest!” 3 But Mary was most troubled To hear the angel’s word. What was the angel saying? It troubled her to hear, To hear the angel’s message, It troubled her to hear. 4 “Fear not, for God is with you, And you shall bear a child. His name shall be called Jesus, God’s offspring from on high. And He shall reign forever, Forever reign on high.” 5 “How shall this be?” said Mary, “I am not yet a wife.” The angel answered quickly, “The power of the Most High Will come upon you shortly; Your child will be God’s child.” 6 As Mary heard the angel, She wondered at his words. “Behold, I am your handmaid,” She said unto her God. “So be it; I am ready According to your Word.” Topics: Annunciation Scripture: Luke 1:26-28 Used With Tune: ANNUNCIATION

To Abraham the Promise Came

Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 15 hymnals Lyrics: 1 To Abraham the promise came, And to his seed for ever, A light to shine in Isaac's line, By scripture we discover; Hail, promised morn! the Savior's born, he glorious Mediator— God's blessed Word made flesh and blood, Assumed the human nature. 2 His parents poor in earthly store, To entertain the stranger They found no bed to lay his head, But in the ox's manger: No royal things, as used by kings, Were seen by those that found him, But in the hay the stranger lay, With swaddling bands around him. 3 On the same night a glorious light To shepherds there appeared, Bright angels came in shining flame, They saw and greatly feared. The angels said, "Be not afraid, Although we much alarm you, We do appear good news to bear, As now we will inform you. 4 "The city's name is Bethlehem, In which God hath appointed, This glorious morn a Savior's born, For him God hath anointed; By this you'll know, if you will go, To see this little stranger, His lovely charms in Mary's arms, Both lying in a manger." 5 When this was said, straightway was made A glorious sound from heaven: Each flaming tongue an anthem sung, "To men a Savior's given, In Jesus' name, the glorious theme, We elevate our voices, At Jesus' birth be peace on earth, Meanwhile all heaven rejoices." 7. Then with delight they took their flight, and winged their way to glory, The shepherds gazed and were amazed, to hear the pleasing story; To Bethlehem they quickly came, the glorious news to carry, And in the stall they found them all, Joseph, the Babe, and Mary. 8. The shepherds then returned again to their own habitation, With joy of heart they did depart, now they have found salvation. Glory, they cry, to God on high, who sent his Son to save us This glorious morn the Savior's born, his name it is Christ Jesus. To All Men Everywhere

Author: Ida M. Budd Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: The Lord has need of workers to till His vineyard wide Refrain First Line: To all men, to all men Lyrics: The Lord has need of workers to till His vineyard wide; Afar His call is sounding now, why idle still abide? Go, join the host who serve Him—their patient labors share, Proclaiming His salvation to all men ev’rywhere. Chorus: To all men, to all men Tell out the joy and gladness that all the world may share, The word the Lord hath spoken, O hasten to declare, Of perfect, free salvation, to all men ev’rywhere. The souls of men are famished, they hunger to be fed, Will you not break, for Jesus’ sake to them the living bread? Go, in His strength and shun not His counsels to declare With all its hope and warning to all men ev’rywhere. To souls in bondage groaning and longing to be free; Christ bids you speak His message sweet of life and liberty; To hearts with sorrow breaking, the news He bids you bear Of tender consolation to all men ev’rywhere.
