Psalm 76

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 41 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76 First Line: In Judah God of old was known Lyrics: In Judah God of old was known; His name in Isr'el great; In Salem stood his holy throne, And Zion was his seat. Among the praises of his saints His dwelling there he chose; There he received their just complaints Against their haughty foes. From Zion went his dreadful word, And broke the threat'ning spear, The bow, the arrows, and the sword, And crushed th' Assyrian war. What are the earth's wide kingdoms else But mighty hills of prey? The hill on which Jehovah dwells Is glorious more than they. 'Twas Zion's King that stopped the breath Of captains and their bands; The men of might slept fast in death, And never found their hands. At thy rebuke, O Jacob's God, Both horse and chariot fell: Who knows the terrors of thy rod? Thy vengeance who can tell? What power can stand before thy sight, When once thy wrath appears? When heav'n shines round with dreadful light, The earth lies still and fears. When God in his own sovereign ways Comes down to save th' oppressed, The wrath of man shall work his praise, And he'll restrain the rest. [Vow to the Lord, and tribute bring, Ye princes, fear his frown; His terror shakes the proudest king, And cuts an army down. The thunder of his sharp rebuke Our haughty foes shall feel; For Jacob's God hath not forsook But dwells in Zion still.] Topics: Enemies destroyed; National deliverance; Church destruction of enemies proceeds from thence; Church wrath against enemies proceeds thence; Israel saved from the Assyrians; Vengeance against the enemies of the church

Refrain: Glory! glory, hallelujah! Glory! glory, hallelujah! Glory! glory, hallelujah! Our God is marching on. 2 I have seen him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps; they have builded him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps; his day is marching on. [Refrain] 3 He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; he is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat; O be swift, my soul, to answer him! Be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on. To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song of Asaph

Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76 First Line: In Judah God is known, his name Lyrics: 1 In Judah God is known: his name Is great in Israel. 2 In Salem also is his tent: In Sion he doth dwell. 3 He arrows of the bow there brake, Shield, sword and battle too. Selah. More bright and wondrous excellent Than mounts of prey art thou. 5 They that are stout of heart are spoil'd, They slept their sleep out-right: And none of them have found their hands That were the men of might. 6 O thou that art of Jacob God, At thy rebuke out-past, The chariot and the horse also To sleep of death are cast. 7 Thou, even thou, art to be fear'd, O who is he therefore, When once thou angry art, that can Thy presence stand before? 8 Thou didst out from the heav'ns above Cause judgment to be heard; The earth in awful silence stood Exceedingly it fear'd. 9 When the great God himself arose His judgment to dispence, Of all the meek once of the earth To be the safe defence. Selah. 10 Assuredly the wrath of man Shall praises to thee gain: And the remainder of their wrath Thou surely shalt restrain. 11 Vow to the Lord your God, and pay All that about him are; And bring ye an oblation To him that is our fear. 12 The spirit that in princes is Asunder cut shall he: Unto the kings on earth that are He shall most dreadful be.

In Judah the Almighty's known

Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76 Lyrics: 1 In Judah the Almighty's known (Almighty, there, by Wonders shown): His Name in Jacob does excel: 2 His Sanctuary in Salem stands: The Majesty that Heaven commands In Sion condescends to dwell. 3 He brake the Bow and Arrows there, The Shield, the temper'd Sword, and Spear; There slain the mighty Army lay: 4 Whence Sion's Fame thro' Earth is spread, Of greater Glory, greater Dread, than Hills where Robbers lodge their Prey. 5 Their valiant Chiefs, who came for Spoil, Themselves met there a shameful Foil: Securely down to Sleep they lay; But wak'd no more; their stoutest Band Ne'er lifted on resisting Hand 'gainst His that did their Legions slay. 6 When Jacob's God began to frown, Both Horse and Charioteers, o'erthrown, Together slept in endless Night. 7 When Thou, whom Earth and Heav'n revere, Dost once with wrathful Look appear, What mortal Pow'r can stand thy sight? 8 Pronounc'd from Heav'n, Earth hear'd its Doom; Grew hush'd with Fear when Thou didst come, The Meek with Justice to restore. 10 The Wrath of man shall yield Thee Praise: Its last Attempts but serve to raise The Triumphs of Almighty Pow'r. 11 Vow to the Lord; ye Nations, bring Vow'd Presents to th' Eternal King: Thus to His Name due Rev'rence pay, 12 Who proudest Potentates can quell, To earthly Kings more terrible, Than, to their trembling Subjects, they.

Psalm 76: In Judah's land God is well known

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76 First Line: In Judah's land God is well known Lyrics: 1In Judah’s land God is well known, his name’s in Isr’el great: 2In Salem is his tabernacle, in Sion is his seat. 3There arrows of the bow he brake, the shield, the sword, the war. 4More glorious thou than hills of prey, more excellent art far. 5Those that were stout of heart are spoil’d, they slept their sleep outright; And none of those their hands did find, that were the men of might. 6When thy rebuke, O Jacob’s God, had forth against them past, Their horses and their chariots both were in a dead sleep cast. 7Thou, Lord, ev’n thou art he that should be fear’d; and who is he That may stand up before thy sight, if once thou angry be? 8From heav’n thou judgment caus’d be heard; the earth was still with fear, 9When God to judgment rose, to save all meek on earth that were. 10Surely the very wrath of man unto thy praise redounds: Thou to the remnant of his wrath wilt set restraining bounds. 11Vow to the Lord your God, and pay: all ye that near him be, Bring gifts and presents unto him; for to be fear’d is he. 12By him the sp’rits shall be cut off of those that princes are: Unto the kings that are on earth he fearful doth appear.

Blessèd city, heavenly Salem

Author: J. M. Neale, 1818-1866 Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 74 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76:2 Lyrics: 1 Blessèd city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who of living stones art builded in the height of heaven above, and with angel hosts encircled, as a bride dost earthward move. 2 Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the Head and corner-stone, chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one, Holy Sion's help for ever, and her confidence alone. 3 To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, to-day; with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray; and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway. 4 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee for ever with the blessèd to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. In Judaea

Author: J. H. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76 First Line: To all that now in Jewry dwell Lyrics: 1 To all that now in Jewry dwell, the Lord is clearly known: His Name is great in Israel, a people of his owne. 2 At Salem he his tents hath picht to tarrie there a space: In Sion eke he hath delight to make his dwelling place. 3 And there he brake both shaft and bow, the sword, the speare, and shield: And brake the ray to overthrow in battel on the field. 4 Thou art more worthy honour Lord, more might in thee doth lie, Than in the strongest of the world, that rob on mountaines high. 5 But now the proud are spoil'd through thee and they are faln on sleep: Through men of war no help can be, themselves they could not keep. 6 At thy rebuke, O Jacobs God, when thou didst them reprove: As halfe on sleep their chariots stood, no horseman once did move. 7 For thou art dreadfull, Lord, indeed, what man the courage hath To bide thy sight, and doth not dread when thou art in thy wrath? 8 When thou dost make thy judgements heard from heaven through the ground, Then all the earth full sore afraid, in silence shall be found. 9 And that when thou O God dost stand in judgement for to speak, To save th'afflicted of the land, on earth that are full weak. 10 The fury that in man doth raigne shall tarrie unto thy praise: Hereafter (Lord) do thou restraine their wrath and threats alwaies. l1 Make vows, and pay them to our God ye folk that nigh him be: Bring gifts all ye that dwell abroad, for dreadfull sure is he. 12 For he doth take both life and might from Princes great of birth: And full of terrour is his sight to all the Kings on earth.

Praise

Author: Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 207 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76:4 First Line: O for a shout of sacred joy Lyrics: 1 O for a shout of sacred joy To God the Sov’reign King! Let ev’ry land their tongues employ, And hymns of triumph sing. 2 Jesus our God ascends on high, His heav’nly guards around, Attend him rising thro' the sky, With trumpet's joyful sound. 3 While angels shout and praise their King, Let mortals learn their strains; Let all the earth his honours sing; O’er all the earth he reigns. 4 Rehearse his praise with awe profound, Let knowledge lead the song; Nor mock him with a solemn sound Upon a thoughtless tongue. 5 In Is'rel stood his ancient throne, He lov'd that chosen race; But now he calls the world his own, And heathens taste his grace. 6 The Gentile nations are the Lord’s, There Abrah'm’s God is known; While pow'rs and princes, shields and swords, Submit before his throne. Behold! The mountain of the Lord

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 182 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 76 Lyrics: 1 Behold! The mountain of the Lord in latter days shall rise on mountain tops above the hills, and draw the wondering eyes. 2 The beam that shines from Zion hill shall lighten every land; the king who reigns in Salem's towers shall all the world command. 3 Among the nations he shall judge, with judgements true shall guide; his sceptre shall protect the just, and quell the sinner's pride. 4 No strife shall rage, nor hostile feuds disturb those peaceful years; to ploughshares all shall beat their swords, to pruning-hooks their spears. 5 No longer hosts encountering hosts shall crowds of slain deplore: they hang the trumpet in the hall, and study war no more. 6 Come then, O come from every land to worship at God's shrine; and, walking in the radiant light, with holy beauties shine.
