Every Creature at GOD's Command

Appears in 21 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 17:1 First Line: Elijah's Example declares Lyrics: 1 Elijah's Example declares, Whatever Distress may betide, The Saints may commit all their Cares To him who will always provide, When Rain long witheld from the Earth Occasion'd a Famine of Bread, The Prophet, secur'd from the Dearth, By Ravens was constantly fed. 2 More likely to rob than to feed, Are Ravens who live upon Prey; But where the LORD's People have need, His Goodness will find out a Way: This Instance to those may seem Strange, Who know not how Faith can prevail; But sooner all Nature shall change, Than one of GOD's Promises fail, 3 Nor is it a Singular Case; The Wonder is often renew'd; And many may say to GOD's Praise, By Ravens he sendeth them Food. Thus Worldlings, tho' Ravens indeed, Tho' greedy and Selfish their Mind, If GOD has a Servant to feed, Against their own Wills can be kind. 4 Thus Satan the Raven unclean, That croaks in the Ears of the Saints, O'er-rul'd by a Power unseen, Administers oft to their Wants; GOD teaches them how to find Food From all the Temptations they feel: This Raven who thirsts for my Blood, Has help'd me to many a Meal. 5 How safe and how happy are they Who on the good Shepherd rely! He'll give them Out Strength for their Day, Their Wants he Will surely supply, He Ravens and Lions can tame; All Creatures obey his Command: Then let me rejoice in his Name, And leave all my Cares in his Hand. A Prophet-Woman Broke a Jar

Author: Brian Wren (1936-) Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 17, 18:1 Lyrics: 1 A prophet-woman broke a jar, by Love's divine appointing. With rare perfume she filled the room, presiding and anointing. A prophet-woman broke a jar, the sneers of scorn defying. With rare perfume she filled the room, preparing Christ for dying. 2 A faithful woman left a tomb by Love's divine commission. She saw, she heard, she preached the word, arising from submission. A faithful woman left a tomb, with resurrection gospel. She saw, she heard, she preached the word, apostle to apostles. 3 Though woman-wisdom, woman-truth, for centuries were hidden, unsung, unwritten, and unheard, derided and forbidden, the Spirit's breath, the Spirit's fire, on free and slave descending, can tumble our dividing walls, our shame and sadness mending. 4 The Spirit knows, the Spirit calls, by Love's divine ordaining, the friends we need, to serve and lead, their powers and gifts unchaining. The Spirit knows, the Spirit calls, from women, men and children, the friends we need, to serve and lead. Rejoice, and make them welcome! I'll Praise My Maker (Psalm 146)

Author: Isaac Watts; John Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 528 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 17:17-24 First Line: I'll praise my Maker while I've breath Lyrics: 1 I'll praise my Maker while I've breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne'er be past while life and thought and being last, or immortality endures. 2 How happy they whose hopes rely on Israel's God, who made the sky and earth and seas with all their train; whose truth forever stands secure, who saves the oppressed and feeds the poor, and none shall find God's promise vain. 3 The Lord pours eyesight on the blind; the Lord supports the fainting mind and sends the laboring conscience peace. God helps the stranger in distress, the widowed and the parentless, and grants the prisoner sweet release. 4 I'll praise my Maker while I've breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne'er be past while life and thought and being last, or immortality endures. When God's own people stand in need

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 18 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 17:6 Lyrics: 1 When God's own people stand in need, His goodness will provide supplies: Thus when Elijah faints for bread, A raven to his succour flies. 2 At God's command, with speedy wings, The hungry bird resigns its prey; And to the rev'rend prophet brings The needful portion day by day. 3 This method may be counted strange; But happy was Elijah's lot: For nature's course shall sooner change, Than God's dear children be forgot. 4 This wonder oft has been renew'd, And saints by sweet experience find Their evils overrul'd for good, Their foes to friendly deeds inclin'd. 5 Who can distrust that mighty hand, Which rules with universal sway; Which nature's laws can countermand, Or feed us by a bird of prey! He Comes to Us As One Unknown

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (1926-); Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 10 hymnals Scripture: 1 Kings 17, 18:1 Lyrics: 1 He comes to us as one unknown, a breath unseen, unheard; as though within a heart of stone, or shriveled seed in darkness sown, a pulse of being stirred. 2 He comes when souls in silence lie and thoughts of day depart, half-seen upon the inward eye, a falling star across the sky of night within the heart. 3 He comes to us in sound of seas, the ocean's fume and foam; yet small and still upon the breeze, a wind that stirs the tops of trees, a voice to call us home. 4 He comes in love as once he came by flesh and blood and birth; to bear within our mortal frame a life, a death, a saving name for every child of earth. 5 He comes in truth when faith is grown; believed, obeyed, adored: the Christ in all the Scriptures shown, as yet unseen, but not unknown, our Saviour and our Lord.
