A Mother Lined a Basket

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Luke 2 Lyrics: A mother lined a basket to keep her baby dry, then rocked him on a river, lest he awake and cry.She let a princess name himher son that he might live.God's people had a leader. She had such hope to give.A mother sewed a jacket, lined in the softest wool, then dressed her little boy-child,her cup of blessing full. She brought him to the templewhere he would serve and live.God's people had a prophet. She had such faith to give. A mother laid her baby in manger lined with straw;then, in the shepherds' story, his call from God foresaw. She nurtured him and taught himthe way that he must live. God's people had a savior. She had such love to give.Like Jochebed and Hannah, and Mary too, we knowthe hardest part of lovingis learning to let go,so when we send our childrenout in the world to live, grant us such hope and faith, God,and love enough to give. If I Could Visit Bethlehem

Author: Brian Wren Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Luke 2:1-7 Lyrics: 1 If I could visit Bethlehem what presents would I bring? If I could see what happened then, what would I say or sing? I wouldn't take a modern toy but gold to pay for bread, some wine to give his parents joy and wool to warm his bed. 2 I'd learn some simple words to speak in Aramaic tongues. I'd cradle him, and kiss his cheek, and say, "I'm glad you've come." If Mary asked me who I was and what her child would do, I wouldn't talk about the cross or tell he all I knew. 3 I'd say, "He'll never hurt or kill, and joy will follow tears. We'll know his name and love him still in twenty hundred years." I cannot visit Bethlehem but what I can, I'll do: I'll love you, Jesus, as my friend, and give my life to you. Tomorrow Christ is coming

Author: Fred Kaan, 1929- Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Luke 2:1-7 Lyrics: 1 Tomorrow Christ is coming, as yesterday he came; a child is born this moment; we do not know its name. The world is full of darkness: again there is no room; the symbols of existence are stable, cross and tomb. 2 Tomorrow will be Christmas, the feast of love divine, but, for the nameless millions, the star will never shine. Still is the census taken, with people on the move; new infants born in stables are crying out for love. 3 There will be no tomorrows for many a baby born; Good Friday falls on Christmas when life is sown as corn, but Jesus Christ is risen and comes again in bread to still our deepest hunger and raise us from the dead. 4 Our Lord becomes incarnate in every human birth. Created in God's image, we must make peace on earth. God will fulfil love's purpose, and this shall be the sign: we shall find Christ among us as woman, child or man.
