William F. Sherwin

1826 - 1888 Person Name: W. F. Sherwin Composer of "CONTENT" in Laudes Domini Sherwin, William Fisk, an American Baptist, was born at Buckland, Massachusetts, March 14,1826. His educational opportunities, so far as schools were concerned, were few, but he made excellent use of his time and surroundings. At fifteen he went to Boston and studied music under Dr. Mason: In due course he became a teacher of vocal music, and held several important appointments in Massachusetts; in Hudson and Albany, New York County, and then in New York City. Taking special interest in Sunday Schools, he composed carols and hymn-tunes largely for their use, and was associated with the Rev. R. Lowry and others in preparing Bright Jewels, and other popular Sunday School hymn and tune books. A few of his melodies are known in Great Britain through I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, where they are given with his signature. His hymnwriting was limited. The following pieces are in common use:— 1. Grander than ocean's story (1871). The Love of God. 2. Hark, bark, the merry Christmas bells. Christmas Carol. 3. Lo, the day of God is breaking. The Spiritual Warfare. 4. Wake the song of joy and gladness. Sunday School or Temperance Anniversary. 5. Why is thy faith, 0 Child of God, so small. Safety in Jesus. Fred Bock

1939 - 1998 Arranger of "RESIGNATION" in Hymns for the Family of God Fred Bock was born in Great Neck, New York. He played the piano at age six and organ at age twelve. He attended Ithaca College, receiving his B.A. in Music Education. He earned his Masters and did Doctoral work in Church Music at the University of Southern California. Fred Bock was one of the most recognized and respected leaders in the world of church music. He was an accomplished composer, arranger, clinician, studio musician, organist, pianist, choral director and music publisher. He was the founder and director of publications for the music publishing division of Word, Inc. and later started Gentry Publication and other publishers of church music. He was also minister of music at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, where he served for 18 years. Before that, he served as minister of music at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles for 14 years. Raquel Mora Martínez

b. 1940 estr. 3 of "Es Jesucristo mi Pastor (My Shepherd Will Supply My Need)" in Fiesta Jubilosa Raquel Martinez (b. January 17, 1940) is a well-known composer and arranger of Hispanic songs and hymns. She has degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso and Perkins School of Theology and the School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University. Dale Grotenhuis

1931 - 2012 Harmonizer of "RESIGNATION" in The Presbyterian Hymnal Dale Grotenhuis (b. Cedar Grove, WI, 1931; d. Jenison, Mi, August 17, 2012) was a member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal 1987 Revision Committee, and was professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until he retired in 1994 to concentrate on composition. Educated at Calvin College; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus; he combined teaching with composition throughout his career and was a widely published composer of choral music. He also directed the Dordt choir in a large number of recordings, including many psalm arrangements found in the 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. Before coming to Dordt, Grotenhuis taught music at Christian high schools in Washington and Michigan. Under his direction, the Dordt College concert choir participated in annual tours that took members throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He loved the church and the music of the church. 1726 - 1800 Person Name: Rev. W. Jones Composer of "ST. STEPHEN" in Hymns and Songs Born: July 30, 1726, Lowick, Northamptonshire, England. Died: January 6, 1800, Hollingbourne, Kent, England. Pseudonym: Jones of Nayland. Jones was educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford. He became Vicar of Bethersden, Kent (1764); Pluckley, Kent; and Paston, Northamptonshire; perpetual Curate of Nayland, Suffolk (1777); and Rector of Hollingbourne, Kent (1798). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1775. His works include: The Catholic Doctrine of the Trinity, 1756 Fairchild Discourses, 1775 Physiological Disquisitions, 1781 A Treatise on the Art of Music, 1784 Church Pieces for the Organ with Four Anthems in Score, 1789 Jones was a descendant of the Col. J. Jones, who was one of the signatories to the death warrant of King Charles I of England. He used to regularly observe January 30 as a day of fasting and humiliation for his ancestor’s sin.
