Timothy R. Matthews

1826 - 1910 Person Name: T. R. Matthews Composer of "CORFE MULLEN" in Common Praise Timothy Richard Matthews MusB United Kingdom 1826-1910. Born at Colmworth, England, son of the Colmworth rector, he attended the Bedford and Gonville Schools and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1853 he became a private tutor to the family of Rev Lord Wriothesley Russell, a canon of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where he studied under organist, George Elvey, subsequently a lifelong friend. He married Margaret Mary Thompson, and they had 11 children: Norton, Mary, George, Cecil, Evelyn, Eleanor, Anne, Arthur, Wilfred, Stephen, and John. Matthews served as Curate and Curate-in-Charge of St Mary’s Church, Nottingham (1853-1869). While there, he founded the Nottingham Working Men’s Institute. He became Rector at North Coates, Lincolnshire (1869-1907). He retired in 1907 to live with his eldest son, Norton, at Tetney vicarage. He edited the “North Coates supplemental tune book” and “Village organist”. An author, arranger, and editor, he composed morning and evening services, chants, and responses, earning a reputation for simple but effective hymn tunes, writing 100+. On a request he wrote six tunes for a children’s hymnal in one day. He composed a Christmas carol and a few songs. His sons, Norton, and Arthur, were also known as hymn tune composers. Ludvig Mathias Lindeman

1812 - 1887 Person Name: L. M. Lindeman (1812-87.) Composer of "WAIT ON THE LORD" in Christian Hymns Ludvig M. Lindeman (b. 1812; d. 1887) was a Norwegian composer and organist. Born in Trondheim, he studied theology in Oslo where he remained the rest of his life. In 1839 he succeeded his brother as the organist and cantor of Oslo Cathedral, a position he held for 48 years up until his death. Lindeman was appointed Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, and was invited to both help christen the new organ in Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as compose for the coronation of King Oscar II and Queen Sophie of Sweden. In 1883, he and his son started the Organist School in Oslo. Lindeman is perhaps best known for his arrangements of Norwegiam folk tales; over the course of his life he collected over 3000 folk melodies and tunes. Laura de Jong

Charles Edward Pollock

1853 - 1928 Person Name: Chas. Edw. Pollock Composer of "HAPPY ZION" in The Songs of Zion Charles Edward Pollock USA 1853-1928. Born at Newcastle, PA, he moved to Jefferson City, MO, when age 17. He was a cane maker for C W Allen. He also worked 20 years for the MO Pacific Railroad, as a depot clerk and later as Assistant Roadmaster. He was a musician and prolific songwriter, composing 5000+ songs, mostly used in Sunday school settings and church settings. He took little remuneration for his compositions, preferring they be freely used. He produced three songbooks: “Praises”, “Beauty of praise”, and “Waves of melody”. In 1886 he married Martha (Mattie) Jane Harris, and they had three children: Robert, Edward, and a daughter. He died in Merriam, KS. John Perry ================= Pollock, Charles Edward. Daniel Webster Crist

1857 - 1929 Person Name: D. W. Christ Arranger of "Beautiful Zion, Built Above" in The Evangelists' Songs of Praise No. 2 Born: November 28, 1857, New Chambersburg, Ohio. Died: March 24, 1929, Alliance, Ohio. Buried: Moultrie Chapel Cemetery, Moultrie, Ohio. Son of Robert Crist and Mary Ruff Crist, Daniel graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1882, and taught school in Columbiana and Stark County, Ohio, for 14 years. He became superintendent of the Osnaburg grade school in 1880, and for three years was superintendent at New Franklin. In 1901, he was elected to the Ohio state legislature, and became a state senator in 1905. Crist was composing as early as 1888, and at least through 1910, when he scored the FLOWER GIRL WALTZ. He worked for 30 years as a successful music publisher, starting in Moultrie, Ohio, where he also taught, farmed, and in New Alexander, served as a church music director and Sunday school superintendent. In 1915, he moved to Alliance, Ohio (where he became president of the Peoples Bank of Alliance). His works include: The Evergreen Waltz Joy and Praise for Sunday Schools, with R. A. Henry S. Rupp

1827 - 1898 Person Name: H. S. Rupp Composer of "ARTHUR" in Hymns and Tunes Rupp, Henry S. (Near Shiremanstown, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, 1827?--January 14, 1898).
