Herbert Stephen Irons

1834 - 1905 Person Name: H. S. Irons Composer of "SOUTHWELL" in The Book of Praise for Sunday Schools Born: January 19, 1834, Canterbury, Kent, England. Died: June 29, 1905, Nottingham, England. Irons was a nephew of the brothers Stephen & George Elvey. He became a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral under T. E. Jones. After studying music under Stephen Elvey at Oxford, he was appointed organist at St. Columba’s College, a large public school at Rathfarnham, near Dublin, Ireland. He stayed there only a few months before being offered the position of organist at Southwell Minister. From Southwell, he went to Chester as assistant organist to Frederic Gunton. Three years later, he accepted an appointment at St. Andrew’s Church, Nottingham, where he remained until his death. --www.hymntime.com/tch

1690 - 1727 Person Name: Dr. W. Wheal Composer of "[We walk by faith, and not by sight]" in The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 William Wheal (Weale) c. 1690-1727 was the organist at St. Paul's, Bedford. He graduated with a Bachelor's in Music from Cambridge in 1719. The tune BEDFORD appeared in the "Psalm Singer's Magazine" of 1729, but it was probably first published earlier. It appears in The Divine Musick Scholars Guide by Francis Timbrell, which has an unknown date of publication, but copies found in personal libraries have dates beginning in 1723. Hancock (b. 1929) Composer of "[We walk by faith, and not by sight]" in Lift Every Voice and Sing II Hancock was born in St. Louis, Mo., on February 17, 1929, and unfortunately for the world of church music, he died in January of 1993. He attended the University of Detroit where he studied music, and then went on to the University of Michigan for a M. Mus. degree. He earned the Doctorate in Sacred Music from Union Seminary in New York City. Hancock was a professor of music at Manhattan Community College and held positions in a number of churches in New York City, including the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and St. Phillips. Joseph W. Lerman

1865 - 1935 Person Name: J. W. Lerman Composer of "[We walk by faith and not by sight]" in Sunday School Hymns No. 1 Born: December 23, 1865, London (possibly Bethnal Green), England. Died: October 24, 1935, Brooklyn, New York. Lerman emigrated to America as a child (he does not appear in the 1871 British census), and was a member of the Olivet Memorial Church in New York City. He played the organ there (1880-1908), and later at the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, Borough Park Christian Church, and Fourth Avenue Methodist Church, all in Brooklyn. He wrote a considerable amount of church and Sunday School music, and served as musical editor for the Tullar-Meredith Company of New York City, and the Theodore Pressure Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
