I bind unto myself today

Author: St Patrick, c. 389-c.461; Cecil Francis Alexander, 1818-95 Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 68 hymnals Scripture: Colossians 3:1-14 Lyrics: 1 I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three. 2 I bind this day to me forever, by power of faith, Christ’s incarnation, his baptism in the Jordan river, his death on cross for my salvation, his bursting from the spiced tomb, his riding up the heavenly way, his coming at the day of doom; I bind unto myself today. 3 I bind unto myself today the virtues of the starlit heaven, the glorious sun’s life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, the flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks, the stable earth, the deep salt sea around the old eternal rocks. 4 I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, God’s eye to watch, God’s might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need, the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard. 5 Against all Satan’s spells and wiles, against false words of heresy, against the knowledge that defiles, against the heart’s idolatry, against the wizard’s evil craft, against the death-wound and the burning, the choking wave, the poisoned shaft, protect me, Christ, till your returning. 6 Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. 7 I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity by invocation of the same, the Three in One and One in Three, of whom all nature has creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation: salvation is of Christ the Lord. (Amen) Used With Tune: ST PATRICK Text Sources: 'St Patrick's Breastplate' Gaelic 5th-7th cent.

Christ Is Alive!

Author: Brian Wren Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 55 hymnals Scripture: Colossians 3:1 First Line: Christ is alive! Let Christians sing Lyrics: 1 Christ is alive! Let Christians sing. The cross stands empty to the sky. Let streets and homes with praises ring. Love, drowned in death, shall never die. 2 Christ is alive! No longer bound to distant years in Palestine, but saving, healing, here and now and touching every place and time. 3 Not throned afar, remotely high, untouched, unmoved by human pains, but daily, in the midst of life, our Savior in the Godhead reigns. 4 In every insult, rift, and war, where color, scorn or wealth divide, Christ suffers still, yet loves the more, and lives, where even hope has died. 5 Christ is alive, and comes to bring good news to this and every age, till earth and sky and ocean ring with joy, with justice, love, and praise. Topics: Cross of Christ; Easter Season; Holy Spirit; Jesus Christ Ever-living; Jesus Christ Final Victory; Justice; Social Concerns Used With Tune: TRURO
