James Quinn

1919 - 2010 Paraphraser of "Lord, Make Us Servants of Your Peace" James Quinn (b. Glasgow, Scotland, April 21, 1919; d. Edinburgh, Scotland, April 8, 2010) was a Roman Catholic Jesuit priest who was ordained in 1950. As a consultant for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, sparked by Vatican II, he has exerted influence far beyond his native Scotland. 1855 - 1932 Person Name: Somerset T. C. Lowry Topics: Year B Proper 27 Author of "Born of God, Eternal Savior" in The New Century Hymnal Lowry, Somerset Corry, M.A., son of James Corry Lowry, Q.C., of Rockdale, Dungannon, Ireland, b. in 1855, and educated at Repton and Trin. Hall, Camb., B.A. 1877, M.A. 1880. Ordained in 1879 to the Curacy of Doncaster. Subsequently Vicar of North Holmwood, Surrey, 1891-1900, and of St. Augustin's, Bournemouth, from 1900. He has published The Work of the Holy Spirit, 1894; Convalescence, 1897; Lessons from the Passion, 1899, &c. His hymns include:— 1. Behold, Lord! how the nations rage, [In Time of War.] Written "For Use during the War between Russia and Japan," in 1904, and printed as a leaflet by Jarvis & Co., Bournemouth. 2. Lord, while afar our brothers fight. [In Time of War.] Written at Holmwood, Surrey, in 1899, after the reverse of Colenso, and extensively used during the S. African War. Given in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 3. 0 Saviour, once again the ebbing year. [For a Memorial Service.] Written at Holmwood, in 1898, for Queen Victoria's annual Service in memory of the Prince Consort. Included in Hymns of the Christ. Centuries, 1903. 4. 0 Son of God, enthroned above. [Advent] Written at Holmwood, in 1892, and given in M. Woodward's Children's Service Book, 1897. 5. Pressing forward. [Processional.] Also in Woodward's Children's Service Book, 1897. Written at Bournemouth, in 1888. 6. Son of God, Eternal Saviour. [For Unity.] Written at Holmwood, in 1893 ; printed in Goodwill, Feb. 1894, and included in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 7. We meet as we have never met before. Andrew Donaldson

b. 1951 Topics: Proper 27 Year A Translator (into French) of "Spirit, Spirit of gentleness" in Voices United Andrew Donaldson, a composer and church musician, grew up in northern Ontario, Canada. He attended Glendon College, York University in Toronto, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He went on to study classical guitar performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, receiving its ARCT (Associate of Royal Conservatory Teachers) degree in 1979. Since then he has worked as a composer and performer in many contexts, in both French and English. Andrew co-edited the Book of Praise (1997), Presbyterian Church in Canada, with Donald Anderson. Their company, Binary Editions, continues to administer copyright for the PCC. In 2007 he was made a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, by Knox College of the University of Toronto, for his body of work in congregational song in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. In 2011 Andrew and his wife, Wendy, moved to Geneva, Switzerland where Andrew works as a worship consultant to the World Council of Churches. --Submitted by Andrew and Wendy Donaldson, 13 August 2013

George Lockwood

b. 1946 Topics: Year C Proper 27 Translator of "Camina, Pueblo de Dios (Go Forth, O People of God)" in The New Century Hymnal Rev. George Lockwood was born in 1946 and has been a missionary to Costa Rica. He has pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in both Arizona and California and served on the editorial committee for the Methodist hymnal supplement Celebremos II. In addition, Lockwood has traveled throughout Central and South America interviewing church musicians and gathering new hymns from both Spanish and Portuguese cultures which he then presents at conferences and workshops. Hans Sachs

1494 - 1576 Topics: Proper 27 Year A Composer of "WACHET AUF" in Voices United Sachs, Hans, the famous German poet and shoemaker, was born at Nürnberg, Nov. 5, 1494; settled there in 1516 after his journeyman wanderings, and d. there on the evening of Jan. 19,1576 (see full notices in K. Goedeke's Grundriss, vol. ii., 1886, pp. 408-437; Allg. Deutsche Biographie, xxx., 115, &c). His poetical works were collected at Nürnberg in 3 vols., folio, 1558-61 (vol. 4, 1578; vol. 5, 1579); and a complete ed. of his works is now being published by the Literary Union of Stuttgart, of which vol. xvii. appeared in 1888. His pre-Reformation hymns are given by Wackernagel, ii., Nos. 1403-1410 ; and his post-Reformation hymns by Wackernagel, iii., Nos. 83-106. Two of his hymns (Wackernagel, iii., Nos. 83, 97) have been translated by Bp.
