Pablo D. Sosa

1933 - 2020 Person Name: Pablo Sosa Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Author of "El cielo canta alegría" in Celebremos Su Gloria Pablo Sosa (b. 1933 - d. 2020) grew up and was educated in Argentina, the U.S. (Westminster Choir College), and Germany. For years he pastored a large Methodist congregation in Buenos Aires, Argentina while composing songs, leading choirs, editing hymnals, producing religious broadcasts, and teaching liturgy and hymnology at a seminary. Meanwhile, life in Argentina pushed him to question his assumptions about what’s best for congregational singing. During Argentina’s “dirty war,” two young women from his church were disappeared, possibly for working among the poor. As Catholic and Protestant churches hesitated whether to speak out, remain silent, or support the government, many people lost faith. Economic meltdown after the war plunged many middle-class Argentinians into poverty. Sosa’s growing social awareness widened his vision for “lifting up hope with a song.” He often describes worship as “the fiesta of the faithful,” where all are welcome and all music is seen as “part of the ‘song of the earth,’ which answers the psalmist’s call ‘Sing joyfully to God, all the earth!’ (Psalm 98:4).” Whether in his home church, Iglesia Evangélica Metodista La Tercera (Third Methodist Church) in Buenos Aires, or at churches or conferences around the world, he urges people, “Put your body into worship!” And he reminds them of the biblical connection between justice and worship. Francis Duckworth

1862 - 1941 Person Name: Francis Duckworth, 1862-1941 Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Composer of "RIMINGTON" in Together in Song Born: December 25, 1862, Rimington, Yorkshire, England. Died: August 16, 1941, at his home Swanside in Colne, England. Buried: St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, Gisburn, Lancashire. His gravestone bears the music of Rimington, and a plaque to his memory was placed above the doorway to the former Methodist Chapel in Stopper Lane, Lancashire. When Duckworth was five years old, his family moved to the village of Stopper Lane, near Rimington. He had to leave school at age 12 to help in the family business. At age 20, he moved to Burnley, Lancashire, to work for a tobacconist cousin. Six years later, he returned to live at Colne, and in 1899 took a grocery business in Market Street, Colne. Duckworth had an early interest in music, but received only three months of formal lessons. Shortly after arriving in Colne, he became deputy organist (later organist) at the Albert Road Methodist Church, serving until 1929. He composed numerous hymn tunes, 18 of them appearing in the Rimington Hymnal. His tune Rimington was sung by a massive congregation of British troops on the Mount of Olives after the surrender of Jerusalem during World War I. --www.hymntime.com/tch

Samuel Webbe

1740 - 1816 Person Name: Samuel Webbe, 1740-1816 Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Composer of "MELCOMBE" in Together in Song Samuel Webbe (the elder; b. London, England, 1740; d. London, 1816) Webbe's father died soon after Samuel was born without providing financial security for the family. Thus Webbe received little education and was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker at the age of eleven. However, he was determined to study and taught himself Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, German, and Italian while working on his apprenticeship. He also worked as a music copyist and received musical training from Carl Barbant, organist at the Bavarian Embassy. Restricted at this time in England, Roman Catholic worship was freely permitted in the foreign embassies. Because Webbe was Roman Catholic, he became organist at the Portuguese Chapel and later at the Sardinian and Spanish chapels in their respective embassies. He wrote much music for Roman Catholic services and composed hymn tunes, motets, and madrigals. Webbe is considered an outstanding composer of glees and catches, as is evident in his nine published collections of these smaller choral works. He also published A Collection of Sacred Music (c. 1790), A Collection of Masses for Small Choirs (1792), and, with his son Samuel (the younger), Antiphons in Six Books of Anthems (1818). Alvin Schutmaat

1921 - 1988 Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Arranger of "ALEGRÍA" in Celebremos Su Gloria Alvin Schutmaat (b. 1921; d. 1988). Using arts to communicate the gospel, Columbian Alvin Schutmaat studied Latin American literature and education in Edinburgh, returning to Colombia to teach theology and music at the Presbyterian Seminary in Bogata; he also taught at the Latin American Biblical Seminary in Costa Rica. Dmitri Stepanovich Bortnianski

1751 - 1825 Person Name: Dmitri Stepanovich Bortnianski, 1732-1825 Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Composer of "ST PETERSBURG" in Together in Song Dimitri Stepanovitch Bortniansky (1751-1825) Ukraine 1751-1825 Born in Glukhov, Ukraine, he joined the imperial choir at age 8 and studied with Galuppi, who later took the lad with him to Italy, where he studied for 10 years, becoming a composer, harpsichordist, and conductor. While in Italy he composed several operas and other instrumental music, composing more operas and music later in Russia. In 1779 he returned to Russia, where he was appointed Director to the Imperial Chapel Choir, the first as a native citizen. In 1796 he was appointed music director. With such a great instrument at his disposal, he produced many compositions, 100+ religious works, sacred concertos, cantatas, and hymns. He influenced Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovshy, the latter editing Bortniansky's sacred work, amassing 10 volumnes. He died in St. Petersburg. He was so popular in Russia that a bronze statue was erected in his honor in the Novgorod Kremlin. David Evans

1874 - 1948 Person Name: David Evans, 1874-1948 Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Harmonizer of "ST PETERSBURG" in Together in Song David Evans (b. Resolven, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1874; d. Rosllannerchrugog, Denbighshire, Wales, 1948) was an important leader in Welsh church music. Educated at Arnold College, Swansea, and at University College, Cardiff, he received a doctorate in music from Oxford University. His longest professional post was as professor of music at University College in Cardiff (1903-1939), where he organized a large music department. He was also a well-known and respected judge at Welsh hymn-singing festivals and a composer of many orchestral and choral works, anthems, service music, and hymn tunes. Bert Polman
