Jakob Hintze

1622 - 1702 Person Name: Jacob Hintze (1622-1702) Scripture: John 7:37-39 Composer of "SALZBURG" in Common Praise (1998) Partly as a result of the Thirty Years' War and partly to further his musical education, Jakob Hintze (b. Bernau, Germany, 1622; d. Berlin, Germany, 1702) traveled widely as a youth, including trips to Sweden and Lithuania. In 1659 he settled in Berlin, where he served as court musician to the Elector of Brandenburg from 1666 to 1695. Hintze is known mainly for his editing of the later editions of Johann Crüger's Praxis Pietatis Melica, to which he contributed some sixty-five of his original tunes. Bert Polman

Alfredo Colom

1904 - 1971 Person Name: Alfredo Colom M. Scripture: John 7:37-46 Author of "La mujer samaritana" in Celebremos Su Gloria Alfredo Colom was a prolific songwriter from Guatemala. He held public office, but ruined his life with alcohol and was considering suicide when an indigenous Guatemalan Christian gave him a New Testament. Eventually he surrendered his life to Christ serving in music and evangelism on the radio and in travels throughout Central and South America. Footnote from Singing the New Testament, hymn #36

Robert Carlton Savage

1914 - 1987 Person Name: Roberto C. Savage Scripture: John 7:37-46 Arranger of "SAMARITANA" in Celebremos Su Gloria Robert Carlson Savage was born in Wisconsin in 1914. He served as a missionary in Colombia and then worked 24 years for HCJB radio in Quito, Ecuador. He edited and compiled several songbooks and hymnals, including Himnos d Fe y Alabanza in 1966. Christian Strover

1932 - 2020 Person Name: Christian Strover Scripture: John 7:37-38 Author of "Have you heard the raindrops (Water of life)" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Christian T. Strover (b. Colchester, Essex, England, 1932) received the B.Litt. and MA degrees from Hertford College in Oxford, England. He was director of music at Emanuel School (Battersea Rise), 1956-1997) and organist and choirmaster at Christ Church in Beckenham, Kent, England (1956-2020). Speros Demetrios Athans

1883 - 1969 Person Name: S. D. Athans Scripture: John 7:37 Author of "Ven a Cristo" in Himnos de Gloria Speros Demetrios Athans was born 1883 in Turkey. Raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, Athans left home at age 15, after his father’s death. He spent two years on the island of Corfu, Greece, and two more in Egypt, then went to Great Britain, where he worked as a sailor. In 1903 he went to America, and during immigration processing, someone gave him a New Testament in Greek. A year later, he joined a Nazarene church in Chicago, Illinois. He then enrolled in a Bible school and university. While in school in California, he began to study Spanish and to work with the Latino community. In 1910 he decided to work in evangelism. Anna Letitia Waring

Waring Scripture: John 7:38-39 Author of "I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength" in Hymns and Meditations See also in: Hymn Writers of the Church ================ Waring, Anna Laetitia, daughter of Elijah Waring, and niece of Samuel Miller Waring, was born at Neath, Glamorganshire, in 1820. In 1850 she published her Hymns and Meditations, by A. L. W., a small book of 19 hymns. The 4th edition was published in 1854. The 10th edition, 1863, is enlarged to 38 hymns. She also published Additional Hymns, 1858, and contributed some pieces to the Sunday Magazine, 1871. Her most widely known hymns are: "Father, I know that all my life," "Go not far from me, O my Strength," and "My heart is resting, O my God." The rest in common use include:— 1. Dear Saviour of a dying world. Resurrection. (1854.) 2. In heavenly love abiding. Safety in God. (1850.) 3. Jesus, Lord of heaven above. Love to Jesus desired. (1854.) 4. Lord, a happy child of Thine. Evening. (1850.) 5. My Saviour, on the [Thy] words of truth. Hope in the Word of God. (1850.) Love of God in Christ, (1860.) These hymns are marked by great simplicity, concentration of thought, and elegance of diction. They are popular, and deserve to be so. 1839 - 1915 Scripture: John 7:37 Author of "Will You Come to the Feast?" in Crowning Day No. 2 Rv Eden Reeder Latta USA 1839-1915. Born at Haw Patch, IN, the son of a Methodist minister, (also a boyhood friend of hymn writer Willam A Ogden) he became a school teacher. During the American Civil War he preached for the Manchester Methodist Church and other congregations (possibly as a circuit rider filling empty pulpits). In 1863 he married Mary Elizabeth Wright, and they had five children: Arthur, Robert, Jennie, two others. He taught for the public schools of Manchester, and later Colesburg, IA. He moved to Guttenberg, IA, in the 1890s, and continued writing song lyrics for several major gospel composers, including William Ogden, James McGranahan, James Fillmore, and Edmund Lorenz. He wrote 1600+ songs and hymns, many being widely popular in his day. His older brother, William, composed hymn tunes. He died at Guttenbert, IA. John Perry

Timothy Dudley-Smith

1926 - 2024 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Scripture: John 7:37 Author of "Christ the Way of life possess me" in Ancient and Modern Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973).
