Phoebe Palmer Knapp

Poland Springs, ME, 1908) displayed great musical talent; she composed and sang children’s song at an early age. The daughter of the Methodist evangelist Walter C. Palmer, she was married to John Fairfield Knapp at the age of sixteen. Her husband was a founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and after his death, she shared her considerable inherited wealth with various charitable organizations. She composed over five hundred gospel songs, of which the tunes for “Blessed Assurance” and “Open the Gates of the Temple” are still popular today. Bert Polman

Teasley entered the ministry of the Church of God denomination in 1896, and pastored in New York. Sometime after 1910, he became General Manager of the Gospel Trumpet Company, where he worked until 1917. He then worked as general manager of Warner Press (1917-18). May Whittle Moody

1870 - 1963 Person Name: May W. Moody Topics: Special Selections Solos, Quartettes, etc. Composer of "[Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine]" in The Cokesbury Worship Hymnal Mary (May) Jennette Whittle Moody 1870-1963. Born at Chicago, IL, daughter of hymnwriter, Daniel Webster Whittle (El Nathan), and, upon marrying, daughter-in-law to Dwight Lyman Moody, she attended Northfield School in MA (one of two schools founded there by D L Moody), after which she attended Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH. She then attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, England (1890-91). She became a singer, organist, composer, and hymn editor. She assisted her father and Dwight L Moody in their evangelistic work. In 1894 she married William Revell Moody, and they had four children: Irene, Dwight, Beatrice, and Virginia. Only Beatrice lived to adulthood, the others died before age six. She and her husband returned to Northfield, MA, where her husband headed the schools founded by his father. She had an organ in her home, and she collaborated with her father by composing some of the tunes for his hymn lyrics. The last year of his life, her father, Daniel, lived with them (he died in 1901). She died at East Northfield, MA. John Perry

Tom Fettke

b. 1941 Topics: Special Times and Seasons Thanksgiving Composer (descant) of "ASH GROVE" in The Celebration Hymnal Thomas E. Fettke (b. Bronx, New York City, 1941) Educated at Oakland City College and California State University, in Hayward, CA, Fettke has taught in several public and Christian high schools and served as minister of music in various churches, all in California. He has published over eight hundred compositions and arrangements (some under the pseudonyms Robert F. Douglas and David J. Allen) and produced a number of recordings. James G. Small

Small Topics: Special Selections Solos Author of "I've Found a Friend" in Christ in Song Small, James Grindly, son of George Small, J.P. of Edinburgh, was born in that city in 1817. He was educated at the High School, and the University of Edinburgh. He studied divinity under Dr. Chalmers, and in 1843 he joined the Free Church of Scotland. In 1847 he became the minister of the Free Church at Bervie, near Montrose. He died at Renfrew, Feb. 11, 1888. His poetical works were (1l) The Highlands and other Poems, 1843, 3rd ed. 1852; (2) Songs of the Vineyard in Days of Gloom and Sadness, 1846 ; (3) Hymns for Youthful Voices, 1859; (4) Psalms and Sacred Songs, 1866. His well-known hymn "I've found a Friend; oh such a Friend" (Jesus, the Friend), appeared in his Psalms & Sacred Songs, 1866. It is found in I. D. Avis B. Christiansen

1895 - 1985 Topics: Solos and Specials Author of "Precious Hiding Place" in Assembly Songs Avis Marguerite Burgeson was born in 1895 and lived in Chicago all her life. She attended the Moody Church, pastored for many years by Dr. Harry Ironside. In 1917, Avis Burgeson married Ernest Christiansen who later became a vice president of Moody Bible Institute. She was a modest and retiring woman, and sometimes used pen names: Avis Burgesson, Christian B. Anson and Constance B. Reid. She began writing poems in childhood, and before her death in 1985 had written thousands of them. She died in 1985. NN, Hymnary

Richard Storrs Willis

1819 - 1900 Person Name: R. S. Willis Topics: Special Occasions Christmas; Special Occasions Christmas Composer of "CAROL" in Christ in Song Richard Storrs Willis (February 10, 1819 – May 10, 1900) was an American composer, notably of hymn music. One of his hymns is "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" (1850), with lyrics by Edmund Sears. He was also a music critic and journal editor. Willis, whose siblings included Nathaniel Parker Willis and Fanny Fern, was born on February 10, 1819, in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Chauncey Hall, the Boston Latin School, and Yale College where he was a member of Skull and Bones in 1841. Willis then went to Germany, where he studied six years under Xavier Schnyder and Moritz Hauptmann. While there, he became a personal friend of Felix Mendelssohn. After returning to America, Willis served as music critic for the New York Tribune, The Albion, and The Musical Times, for which he served as editor for a time. He joined the New-York American-Music Association, an organization which promoted the work native of naturalized American composers. He reviewed the organization's first concert for their second season, held December 30, 1856, in the Musical World, as a "creditable affair, all things considered". Willis began his own journal, Once a Month: A Paper of Society, Belles-Lettres and Art, and published its first issue in January 1862. Willis died on May 7, 1900. His interment was located at Woodlawn Cemetery.
