Father of peace, and God of love!

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 66 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Father of peace, and God of love! we own thy pow’r to save, that pow’r by which our Shepherd rose victorious o’er the grave. 2 Him from the dead thou brought’st again, when, by his sacred blood, confirmed and seal'd for evermore, th’ eternal cov’nant stood. 3 O may thy Spirit seal our souls, and mould them to thy will, that our weak hearts no more may stray, but keep thy precepts still; 4 That to perfection’s sacred height we nearer still may rise, and all we think, and all we do, be pleasing in thine eyes. Scripture: Hebrews 13:20-21 Used With Tune: ST AGNES, DURHAM

Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost

Author: Christopher Wordsworth, 1807-1885 Meter: 7.7.7.5 Appears in 205 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, taught by You, we covet most, of Your gifts at Pentecost, holy, heavenly love. 2 Faith that mountains could remove, tongues of earth or heaven above, knowledge, all things, empty prove without heavenly love. 3 Though I as a martyr bleed, give my goods the poor to feed, all is vain if love I need; therefore give me love. 4 Love is kind, and suffers long; love is meek, and thinks no wrong; love, than death itself more strong: therefore give us love. 5 Prophecy will fade away, melting in the light of day; love will ever with us stay: therefore give us love. 6 Faith, and hope, and love we see joining hand in hand, agree; but the greatest of the three, and the best, is love. Used With Tune: CAPETOWN

O for a closer walk with God

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,373 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O for a closer walk with God, a constant, heavenly calm; a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! 2 Where is the blessing that I knew when first I saw the Lord? Where is the soul-refreshing view of Jesus and His word? 3 What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void the world can never fill. 4 The dearest idol I have known — however must adored — help me to tear it from Your throne and worship You as Lord. 5 So shall my walk be close with God, my mind serene and calm; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Used With Tune: CAITHNESS Text Sources: Adapt.: Compliers of Praise!, 2000

Fold to your heart your sister and your brother

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892 Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 149 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Fold to your heart your sister and your brother: where pity dwells, the peace of God is there; to worship rightly and to love each other, each smile a hymn, each kindly deed a prayer. For he whom Jesus loved has truly spoken: the holier worship which He deigns to bless restores the lost, and binds the spirit broken, and feeds the widow and the fatherless. 2 Follow with reverent steps the great example of Him whose holy work was doing good: so shall the wide earth seem our Father's temple, each loving life a psalm of gratitude. Then shall all shackles fall: the stormy clangour of wild war music o'er the earth shall cease; love shall tread out the baleful fire of anger, and in its ashes plant the tree of peace. Used With Tune: INTERCESSOR
